even my backwards, redneck ass didn't like west virginia. i mean, the hunting was cool and the scenery was cool in some places, but man were the towns and people terrible.

I once stopped in Westin WV and ate some taco bell. People stared at us the whole time. It was creepy as hail.

Jeez, some of the most beautiful places I've seen were in the WV mountains.

You're really one to judge when you're just driving through.

But I really can't talk about the towns or people, since that's not what I've gone there for.

agreed.

but it's cool to hate, so people act like all uppity and shit because they're a hick from NC instead of a hick from WV, looking at you NRR.

I climb at New River Gorge in Fayetteville, WV, and every day at 3:00 you hear thunder, which is actually blasting from mountaintop removal sites a couple miles away.

This

once looked similar to this

Check out this flickr page for before and after Google Earth imagery, and other pictures:

ps. I can't help but laugh when people say WV is a shithole.

That looks great and all but if thats the best you've seen then you need to get out more. I mean, even NC has that.

I'm quite the environmentalist but halfway through this show I realized that without the coal, then that area of rural wv would be pointless and completely die. I kind've felt sorry for the coal supporters. The area really has nothing else to offer/provide. Every surrounding state has views just like that but it came down to water pollution. It seems a small population like that could import drinking water fairly easily.

Don't get me wrong, I'm the most anit-coal guy you will find but that area must have coal. Its really a shame that the companies are greedy and take the mountop removal or nothing approach but thats just the reality of the situation. Really they should ban mountop removal nationwide which would create more coal jobs (and danger) and would drive up the cost of coal energy making alternative, clean resources more viable. Seems like a win win to me until people get stuck or blwon up in a mine.

Did I say it was the best I've seen? West Virginia contains the wildest parts of the Appalachians, and mountain top removal is actively destroying that. Coal companies would rape all of Appalachia if they could.

Bullshit. The coal industry only employs 30,000 West Virginians, out of a population of nearly 2 million. On top of this, only 1/3 of the coal in West Virginia is mined through mountain top removal.
