I was over by my friend's desk talking about how amazing Walmart Chicken wings are and missed the whole damn thing. My desk shakes every time someone walks by...crappy building.

there was some actual damage at the epicenter... my aunt (not the one from new jersey i previously talked about in this thread) drove there and saw a lot of chimney damage, and at least a few injuries from a high school where the gym roof had partially collapsed.

yeah, some girl i went to high school with lost her house.

granted, it looked to have been built 130 years ago, and still had a carport, but nevertheless, it's gone and her insurance won't cover it.

sucks for her.

The 555-foot Washington Monument will be closed indefinitely after engineers found a crack near the top, presumably caused by Tuesday's East Coast earthquake. The National Park Service said the closing of the 91,000-ton monument is to keep the public safe, the Associated Press reported. "

NEWS FLASH. A surge of 100s of apparently unconnected fires broke out 2 days after the East Coast earthquake that condemned old uninsured buildings.

"dont know if its been noted yet but the softer ground on the east coast allows waves to travel further while they diminish quickly in the solid rock out west."

wow. couldn't be more wrong.

the highly fractured and inconsistent bedrock in the west allows earthquake energy to dissipate very quickly, thus earthquakes aren't typically felt from far away.

on the east coast, however, the older, more stable, less fractured, consistent bedrock allow for this energy to propagate vast distances, thus why smaller earthquakes (like yesterdays) can be felt up and down much of the coast (reports from toronto to south carolina)

It's only a matter of time before the big one hits and the East Coast splits off into the ocean.
