Had some coffee @ Videri today....pretty good stuff.

They have also added a bunch of varieties of truffles/smaller bite sized chocolate confections which is cool.

that's good that they have a variety. i haven't been since not too long after they opened and was disappointed that they had the large retail space to just sell bars.

^agreed...they have done a better job with the space. Adding the coffee, some chocolate variety and some production display area in the back. They still only have 4 kinds of bars, all of the dark chocolate variety, but its definitely a better use of the space than the original version.

Did anyone go to the food truck rodeo today? Did it live up to Durham standards?

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/05/12/2888338/shaffer-raleigh-uproots-83-year.html

I just thought this comment was pretty funny:
Mitch Silver and his chorus of tax-sucking boosters and fake planners have long made known their preferred type of citizen: young, compliant, faux-urban, hipster clones whom he thinks won't consume much in the way of city services except for what the city tells them they should. "Here, have another fake bike lane to go with that fake traffic study!" "Thank you, sir!"

Here is an excerpt of the article:
RALEIGH — Nettie Grove shuffled to the door on her walker, still wearing her nightgown in the late afternoon, and invited me in for a cup of Sanka and half a Krispy Kreme doughnut.

I’d come to hear how Raleigh bought the house she rents on Carver Street and gave her 90 days to move. At age 83. After a stroke.

“Bless your cotton-pickin’ heart,” Nettie said, glad for any company.

She sat me at the coffee table where she keeps her Bible and her Ava Gardner biography.

She told me she used to be a third-grade teacher and the wife of a Navy test pilot – back when anybody remembered her name.

She told me that once a month, a volunteer drives her to the credit union and the Harris Teeter, where she picks up four weeks’ worth of groceries.

Then she handed me the news that made me swallow my Sanka down the wrong pipe: Raleigh wants Nettie gone even though there’s no pressing need. Nothing imminent is getting built on her lot. The city can’t even say for sure whether her house will be demolished.

It raises the old gentrification debate.

it's not like she pays rent. Raleigh has the right to do what they with the property they own. (of course this illustrates the problem with the government owning an excess of property... government efficiency at it's finest)

I feel bad for the old lady, she does not want to get stuck in some high crime housing project. The other side is that old house that has probably been neglected is going to be a money pit for whoever owns it, her rent likely does not cover the cost of keeping it up.

Hopefully she'll be smoothly relocated to another place close by. As someone else stated she more or less is being fully supported by the state (for her housing). So given enough notice it doesn't seem unreasonable or cruel to move her (for a good reason).

So I believe, the question is, why is that block of Hargett completely empty (except for that one lonely house) in the first place?

Emo? Holy shit that name is awful. Awfuler than calling North Hills "Midtown," which has unfortuantely caught on.

On all my maps, east of Moore Square is blank and just says "HERE BE DRAGONS."

Garland (the restaurant that's part of King's on Martin St) opened their window today. it will be open the next two nights and then next weekend for good. everyone I talked to that went by said it was delicious. I'm gonna go check it out tomorrow.

also, Trophy opened their patio and serves pizza/salads now. the pizza we got was good but not great, but it was their first night so I'll try it again.

^looks like they added some glass/french doors to the patio as well.

I hope the pizza ends up being decent. I guess if they can sell enough food they won't have to do the "private club" thing much longer.

Garland menu is half Indian and half Korean. They did one side of the menu Wednesday night and one last night. We ordered everything both nights and it was all great.

Extra thumbs up for veggie pakoras, pork rice bowl, and cauliflower "65".

They'll be open tonight, too, and should have most of both nights' menus available. The window will open permanently some time next week, and then the restaurant proper some time later this year. When the restaurant opens, the window will be closed while the dining room is open, and then reopen for late night.

Not only is it awesome in general, it'll be really cool for touring bands to have some legit food in the building. CC16 is fantastic, but they don't do late night during the week and the closest thing for bands right now is the fucking Subway.

^agreed, glad that space is finally being used, and the late night food window is a fantastic idea. If I were a betting man, more of these will sprout up in the future as people realize there is a market for late night food that goes beyond hot dogs. (and I love hot dogs)

http://trianglefoodguy.blogspot.com/

Some interesting "downtown" tidbits in this weeks entry!

Quote :
"This could very well be the longest “opening soon” restaurant story in recent memory...but it appears as if the wait is over...sort of. Back in October 2011 I wrote that it “looks like things are starting to move forward with The Garland at 14 W. Martin Street in downtown Raleigh. While it is too early to talk about an opening date for Raleigh's next Indian cuisine, we can tell you that the initial phase will feature a walk-up window, with the final phase adding a dining room and outdoor seating. The Garland will be in the former location of Martin Street Pizza.” It looks like that walk-up window is now open...at least temporarily. But we’ll continue to keep an eye on it."

Also info about Donut Theory, the old "Market" space, and Berkeley Cafe (losing its music venue)

LOL LOL LOL LOL

Emails have revealed that Raleigh City Manager Russell Allen was fired because he didn't reserve parking spaces close enough for City Council members, who "often had to park blocks away and were afraid to walk to their cars at night".

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/05/12/2887684/emails-reveal-tension-between.html

See? I'm not the only one that avoids downtown because it's sketchy and there's nowhere to park. The City Council agrees!

LOL LOL LOL LOL

The best part is that the deck in question is probably the best-lit, safest deck on the grid.

AND THERE'S A FUCKING SKYWAY DIRECTLY FROM CITY HALL TO THE SPOTS IN QUESTION

In other news, anyone notice the piano on the circular "patio" area at City Hall? I'm told there are others around, but haven't seen any.

There are others by marbles and in Moore Square

The guy who had the main complaint about parking was a retired colonel. So its pretty much exactly what you expect from a colonel
