Shopping for internet service at a new place. It seems from past experience the speed is never as fast as it says. I currently have turbo and think it's still pretty slow. For people who have other plans...is the Extreme really twice as fast as turbo? Or is it mainly just faster on sites like apple, google, etc. that can handle higher upload speeds?
Probably not going with wideband, but it'd be awesome to have service as fast as it is on campus
Wideband Internet (up to 50 Mbps) $99.95/mo. Road Runner® Broadband Extreme (up to 30 Mbps) $49.99/mo. For 12 Months Road Runner® Broadband Turbo (up to 15 Mbps) with PowerBoost® $39.94/mo. For 12 Months Road Runner® Broadband (up to 10 Mbps) $29.99/mo. For 12 Months 8/28/2011 11:48:45 PM |

Eh. I've got extreme. My connection has never tested above 25 Mbps, even through TWC's speed test site, and of course, I've never come close to saturating my download pipe. Even with Newsgroup servers, my downloads seem to cap out around 2Mbps, which isn't stellar considering I was @ ~1Mbps on the lowest tier of service. It's definitely nice to be able to download @ the 2 Mbps speed without interrupting other people on the network doing things like streaming via Netflix, so maybe there is something to be said for the higher tier of service after all. 8/29/2011 1:12:56 AM |

I'm gonna go ahead and be captain obvious. Get the one on the price tier you can afford. If I thought it was worth $89 I'd get the 25Mbit downlink here at the house, but I don't. So I have the 10Mbit.
And honestly unless you need to SEND a lot of data 10Mbit is going to be plenty for an average household.
Also, powerboost is a complete joke. They get that extra speed from caching, not allocation (unless something has changed in the year since I was with them.) 8/29/2011 1:17:20 AM |

It's also worth noting here that RR's upload speed is absolute shit. 1Mbps on the tier I'm on, which is pretty ridiculous. I dunno how folks that upload large files with any regularity get by. 8/29/2011 1:58:53 AM |

extreme is well worth if you stream any content. i run subsonic and have a slingbox and the 5mbps upload is money. 30mbps down is nice but not necessary 8/29/2011 7:57:43 AM |

Extreme has a 5mbps upload. There's either something wrong with your connection or you don't actually have extreme.
It's 5mb/s for 30 and 50 and 3 for 10/15 I believe.
While 5 isn't amazing it's still decent. I didn't think Comcast or U-verse go above 5.
I have the 50/5 and it's consistent almost 100% of the time. My friends with 30/5 says it's pretty consistent too. Whether I'm downloading from Steam or usenet it's always 6.2MB/s.
Think I was uploading to dropbox too. Why the upload is a little slow.

Yeah Time Warner has been awesome the last couple times I've had to interact with them. Very prompt and quick to respond. They've really gotten their shit together over the last few years. I'm close to uptown Charlotte and still get consistent speeds. If you don't they'll fix it. 30/5 for $50/month is hard to beat.
My friends house with the extreme package for $50/month:
He lives only a couple miles from uptown Charlotte.

so I will be getting a new place relatively soonish and i am dealing with the same issue as to which level of internet speed I need. I plan on using hulu and netflix for tv show watching purposes so i'll be streaming everything I watch. Do i need wideband for that or can I just do extreme? 8/29/2011 10:52:22 PM |

The highest rate at which Netflix streams stuff is 4800kbps (so roughly 5Mbps) unless they've changed it in the last few months. So the lowest Time Warner tier (10Mbps) should be fine. You also have to consider how many people will be streaming stuff and if it'll be at the same time. If all you're doing is streaming video then Turbo (15Mbps) should be fine. I'd only go to 30 or 50 if you're actually downloading content. 8/30/2011 1:47:54 PM |

Moving from WF to Raleigh soon. Currently, my internet is included in the rent price, but I'll be paying for internet again here soon. Is Roadrunner pretty much the only worthwhile option? I'll be doing some gaming but mostly streaming Hulu/Netflix. 3/13/2012 10:50:13 PM |

^yeah, RR 30Mx5M is definitely the best bang for the buck. You should be able to get it for $45 or $50. 3/14/2012 7:41:17 AM |

I got the TV package and 10/1 for $100/month, but I normally get 15-25 down instead of <10. 3/14/2012 8:57:15 AM |
