We're really not, we're just teaching English.

If people ask I'll tell them, but we're not telling them "Learn English so you can read the Bible."

I work in a Hungarian public school. I'm technically a government employee.

You probably wouldn't be too happy if I were to donate money to a muslim charity with the same cause.

What's wrong with lovin on people?

I really don't understand why people get offended. I'm teaching English to fourth graders. I couldn't have a conversation about Jesus with them if I tried.

Once again, if people ask why we act different, I will tell them. I'm not going to try and push religion on people though. If they want to, they will and that choice is theirs. I'm not going to try and make that choice for them.

What you do with your money is your decision, but we're not asking for money. Taking three minutes (if not seconds) to click vote a few times is hardly asking much.

i respectfully disagree with this practice of disguising religious indoctrination as altruism so i will not be voting

^^ No they're not.

I teach English. I'm a Christian. According to everything the Bible talks about, people should notice a difference in Christians. (A good difference... there are a ton of people that mess that up, and I'm guilty of that just as much as anyone else)

If people at work ask, I'll tell them about it, but I'm not going to push it on people.

Education is helping people learn English, because Jesus would help people no matter what.

Development is helping those less fortunate. For example, we've had the opportunity to pick up trash and generally just make conditions livable on the side of a road that prostitutes work. We even brought them roses and told them they were important. Never once mentioned Jesus. They didn't ask.

Missional Leadership is helping lead and encourage people that already ARE Christians.

I fail to see how we are pushing this stuff on people. We're helping people because we want to love on people. In today's day and age (especially in Europe), even mentioning God before someone else asks about it makes us completely incompetent in their eyes. We don't push religion on people.

And besides, the "We're really not" thing was about bribing people into religion.

Just form a group called "people helping people" if religion doesn't play a part.

i thought it was a valid question

in a society where it's impolite to mention religion i figured people would be reluctant to ask about his religious beliefs

so what i was getting at is this - what tangentially related questions would Morphine Boy see as an opportunity to share his religious beliefs? this type of behavior is at the core of my belief that this is not simply about loving people but about indoctrination.

In American society it's impolite sure, but we don't know that about Hungarian society. When I was living overseas I had random ass people ask me often about being a Christian. Too bad for them I'm not a Christian. They usually left the conversation disappointed

He said it was impolite to just start talking about God. But that doesn't mean people can't ask about it necessarily. Just playing devil's advocate.

i found this that i had missed earlier in MB's post

Quote :

this confirms to me that he goes through each day looking for an opening to discuss religion and that this group is dishonest about their intentions

i sorta see what ^ is saying... I can see many conversations going something like:

person getting help/english training: man my day sucks...
overenthusiastic christian helper: you know what makes my day better? Jesus... blah blah blah

Also why don't they help americans learn to read? lots of people in the US can barely read/speak english.

[Edited on September 1, 2011 at 6:36 PM. Reason : not saying all conversations will go like that but many will]

i respectfully disagree with this
if it's doing good, i dont care what it's disguised as.

on a semi related note-cody and i went to a church where they had a school project going on where you buy a bookbag with notebooks and the like for a kid.
their first rule was - no religious material because this was being distributed to kids of all faiths.
i thought that was really cool and respectful.

I will support Morphine Boy. Nothing drives me crazier than people who try to cram religion down my throat, whether its a shared religious belief or not... but if MB says that's not the case I trust him, he's good people.

Bump for the Votes. We're up to 142 this morning! Awesome! Thanks to those who have voted and helped out!

Last year, I had ONE conversation with a colleague about my beliefs, and she instigated the conversation. And it wasn't a "My day sucks..." and me being overenthusiastic. It was a "Why do you and your fiance not live together?" "Well, because of our beliefs." "What do you believe?"

We're not street-corner fire-n-brimstone preachers over here.

Just English teachers.
