Quote :
"A young couple has died in Kahoku, Ishikawa Prefecture, after falling into a hole on a beach that was dug as a birthday prank for the husband, police said. One of the couple’s friends called a fire station at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday and said company employee Yuki Demura, 23, and his wife Risa, 23, had fallen in the hole on Osaki beach. Rescue workers pulled the couple out about an hour later. They were taken to a hospital but were confirmed dead shortly afterward, police said.

The couple’s upper bodies were covered by sand, police said. They are believed to have suffocated.

Risa and five friends of the couple reportedly dug the 2.4-meter-square and 2.5-meter-deep hole Saturday afternoon as a surprise for Yuki, whose birthday was on Sept. 1. They put a sheet over the hole and covered the sheet with sand, they said.

A mat was found inside the hole, and shovels and a ladder were close by.

Risa is believed to have brought Yuki to the beach from their house at night and fallen into the hole with him at about 10 p.m."

For reference: 8.2 ft * 105 pcf = 861 psf or 6 psi
*Assumes the unit weight of the sand is about 105 pounds per cubic feet and they were buried the full depth.

Guys, here is the plan.

Lets dig an 8.5 foot deep hole that requires a ladder to get out of...

Or better yet, dig a hole with vertical sides and not worry about it caving in.

You'd think they'd have someone monitoring the hole to, you know, make sure whoever fell in got back out

how did all the sand fall on them? Sounds like something sinister here.

also how short were these people? couldn't one of them stand on the other's shoulders and get out?

these people would have made shitty candidates for ABC's WipeOut.

Well I mean, if you fell 8 feet without expecting the fall, I could see someone easily breaking some bones in that fall, or at the very least spraining an ankle or two. They could have been incapacitated in that way. And being pitch black in the middle of the night probably didn't help either.

Just watched the video. Police are saying there was enough sand on that tarp that when they fell in the sand buried them to the point they couldn't get themselves out. How the hell did they manage to get that much sand on the tarp without the tarp collapsing from the weight

Ahah.

Well now I'm really curious why this hole was dug in the first place?

There's no law against digging deep holes at the beaches in the US but I'm fairly certain it's illegal to not fill them in before dark.

From now on I will only purchase tarps made in Kahoku, clearly they are the best tarps in the world.

Maybe they only put an inch or two of sand over the portion of the tarp that covered the hole, then piled on a few feet of sand on the portions of the tarp that didn't cover the hole - enough to anchor/suspend the tarp over the hole.

They had a lot of displaced sand, they probably constructed a small sand dune over the part of the tarp. Maybe when they fell in it pulled the tarp and a sand dune in with them?

How did they get them to walk on to the tarp in the first place?

I was curious about that as well. Watching the video there doesn't seem to be any sort of access point to the beach or anything from where the hole was dug. Maybe the couple took nightly walks along the beach so the friends knew where to dig the hole?

That's my first thought when I read the story. Talk about some dumb fucking friends.

The wife helped to dig the hole, then went with him on a walk. Not that hard to get him to walk over it when you know where it is.
