The dishwasher silverware basket on my mom's new dishwasher is such that you can only put them in handles down.
I always go for handles up though. Seems to work. 9/4/2011 10:20:46 AM

Ever since I heard a story about someone tripping and impaling themselves on handle down knives, I always do handle up.
Never had a problem with it. 9/4/2011 10:28:26 AM

handle down, i assume the important part of the silverware washes better if the plastic tray isn't blocking the water jets or whatever happens when it's on
i cut my hand pretty bad once on a sharp knife that was angled weird so i couldn't see it, i reached down to pick up the tray and slid my hand right on the point, bled like crazy] 9/4/2011 10:28:26 AM

it's better to do it handle down so it drip dries down, but when you empty it you touch the eating side of it-

This. I can open the part on the basket so it doesn't have the silverware slots. I have one open on one side and one down on the other. So I do a mix of handles up and down. Steak and cutting knives I hand wash though....only butter and table knives in the dishwasher.

you can grab the utensils by the neck if you take an extra second (if they are handle-down) to avoid touching the eating side 9/4/2011 7:45:46 PM

I alternate between the two. First one in that section goes handle down, then the next one is handle up, etc. Can't have to many spoons "spooning" so they never get clean.
And I put everything in the dishwasher. I dont' care what the instructions that came with it said. I've never had a problem so far. 9/5/2011 9:27:45 AM

Agreed.
When I DO use it, I normally do handles up. My dishwasher mostly gets used to just store dishes until I can wash them by hand. 9/5/2011 11:33:30 AM
