Don't feel like lugging all my crap down three flights of stairs when I move later this month lol. Who in the area is reasonably priced and won't break all my crap. 9/6/2011 11:00:44 AM |

I've used http://www.movinghelp.com through U-Haul four times now. Each time I've rented and driven the truck myself, but hired people to load and unload the truck. I've been exceptionally pleased with the crews each time EXCEPT for my lone experience with a Raleigh crew.
"1Hrfree Travel Core Transportation" was the group I used here, and they did an alright job, but didn't seem very professional. I will be using the same service to pick a different moving crew when we purchase our home. 9/6/2011 12:27:41 PM |

TROSA!
I cannot recommend them highly enough. Very likely the cheapest place you will find due to the nature of their business. However, when they moved us from our apartment (2nd story) to our new house, the move was flawless. It was ridiculously fast, everything was handled properly (fragile boxes were actually treated as fragile). We packed everything ourselves, but you can also pay them to pack items as well. They wrap all of your furniture, tvs, etc to keep them from getting damaged. When its delivered, they unwrap, unpack (if requested), clean up, and leave.
As much as I know this is going to make me sound like a tool, this is an email I wrote to their supervisor/manager after the move (in response to a follow up questionnaire they sent). I am in no way affiliated with them -- just wanted to make sure I got my point across about how impressed I was with the move. Yes, I am a tool.
Quote : | "Mr. Rorie,
The guys that came out to assist with our move were absolutely amazing. In fact, the entire process was great. Let me start at the beginning.
We called in a few weeks ago to setup an appointment to have 3 movers and a truck show up for our move after multiple coworkers of mine had given us great word of mouth reviews about your service. The lady I spoke with was very polite and helped get us scheduled for Saturday, August 1st. A couple of days later I spoke with another lady who called to see if we would consider moving our scheduled date to Sunday, August 2nd. She was very polite again on the phone and very apologetic she was having to make the phone call. She told us if moving our appointment to Sunday was not an option, they would find a way to accommodate us on Saturday. As it was, Sunday worked just as good for us as Saturday and we agreed to reschedule to 9 AM on Sunday the 2nd. Our rates were still to stay at $118/hour even though it was a Sunday move since we had originally made our appointment for Saturday.
Flash forward to Sunday morning
8:45 AM has just come around and I see the TROSA truck backing into a spot outside of my apartment. It's always a great feeling to have people show up early for a change! I am so used to what I refer to as "Time Warner Cable scheduling" where you are given a 2 hour block of time and the technician shows up an hour late!
One of the guys identified himself as the driver and all three of them introduced themselves to my girlfriend and I. The driver said he had some paperwork he needed to go over with me and asked if it was OK for him and his guys to come in to get things started. The driver sat down with me and explained all of the paperwork and proceeded to give us a booklet of information. Meanwhile the 2 other guys had been moving our prepackaged boxes down to the truck. We finished the paperwork up right around 9 AM and I was informed that since you guys bill by the 1/4 hour my start time would be listed as 9:15 AM.
The driver spent a large portion of time getting things situated and secured in the truck while the other 2 movers brought him box after box, chair after chair, in rapid fire. I was completely in awe of how efficient and fast they worked. Even the larger items (Our huge dresser, washer and dryer, etc) were moved down with lightning speed. The communication between the movers was great and everyone seemed to be on the same page. All of our fragile items were blanketed and wrapped, all of the furniture was also wrapped for us. We offered the guys bottled water a few times but they refused to take anything. Within about 45 minutes - 1 hour, we had everything loaded onto the truck... I can't even begin to explain how amazed I was at their speed.
Once we had everything loaded up and the driver verified with me that everything was ready to go, they followed us the 20+ minutes to our new home.
By the time we reached our new home, my luck finally started to kick in and the rain started to fall pretty heavily. The drivers backed up as close as possible to our garage doors and quickly got to work unloading items. Before entering the house, they laid down a few blankets on our laminate floors to make sure they did not track anything through. As each item made its way inside we were consulted about where we would like to have the item located. The unloading of the truck was even quicker than the initial loading - including the time they spent reassembling our dresser and moving items around to the places we chose.
As two of the movers finished arranging a few things for us, the driver sat down with me and figured out the final amount I would owe. The total came to 2.25 hours of work (I still have absolutely no idea how these men were able to move so much in such a short amount of time!). With packing materials, wrapping, a wardrobe box, and the moving time figured out, I ended up just shy of $300 for the total move - significantly cheaper than I could have ever imagined.
All in all this was the single best move we have ever made, due in LARGE part to the awesome men you sent out to move us. They were polite, hard working, very efficient, and most importantly very professional. Like I said at the start of this email, you guys came very highly recommended to me -- I must say, your men surpassed our wildest expectations.
Today since I have been back at the office I have had a few people ask me the standard small talk question "How did your move go?" - I am sure they expected the standard "good" or "horrible" - instead I have just about talked their ear off about how impressed I am with your service.
I do apologize for the length of this email, it has turned out much longer than I expected it to be! Thank you guys for offering such a great service!
Sincerely, " |

Did that rate (118/hr) include them bringing their own truck and packing materials? 9/6/2011 2:43:16 PM |

It included the price of the truck -- I believe packing materials were extra, although not expensive. Things like wardrobe boxes were definitely an added charge. I think we only spent $30-$50 extra for the packing materials (again, we had most of our stuff packed) and the wardrobe boxes. This move was 2 years ago, so I'd imagine pricing has changed somewhat, definitely would call and ask them about pricing now.
The way they did it when we rented:
You told them the # of rooms, # and type of "large" items, and an approximation of how much stuff you were moving. Depending on your needs, they had different size trucks. You then have the option to have 2 men and a truck, 3 men and a truck, etc -- each with different rates. We were recommended to use 3 movers, however we chose to go with 2 instead since almost everything was packed. They also had different rates for Sundays (not sure if this is still the same).
If we were getting everything packed we would have done 3 guys for sure (2 to move large items while 1 packs). With that being said, 2 worked out great.
It's worth mentioning, TROSA is "Triangle Residents Overcoming Substance Abuse" -- these are recovering addicts for the most part who are trying to turn their lives around and make an honest living. From what I was told, they go through random drug tests with no forewarning. Also, a supervisor is present with each team. We were really skeptical and put off by the fact they were ex-addicts, but we had enough word of mouth from friends and coworkers to give us the confidence to go with them (and as you can tell, we were very glad we did).
By all means though, give them a call to get specifics.

They can't be any worse than the last guys we used when we moved. Pretty sure they were using addicts
How many sqft of stuff was it approximately? 9/6/2011 3:16:31 PM |

I can't remember off the top of my head but it was basically:
46" TV, large couch, love seat, 2x recliners, 2 beds (a queen and king), dining room table and chairs, all of our small kitchen appliances (the dishwasher/stove was the apartments), our washer and dryer, and all of our clothes and miscellaneous items (vacuums, towels, bathroom stuff, random paintings/pictures, etc).
Our apartment at the time was 900sqft and overloaded with stuff.
Doesn't sound like all that much when I type it out, but it definitely was a ton of crap. I remember moving myself into the apartment (just my stuff, before my fiancee moved in), and it took forever. Moving her into the apartment was also a nightmare. The two of us trying to carry a couch up the steps had to have been comical to our neighbors. 9/6/2011 3:28:50 PM |

I used All My Sons moving last time. They were pretty quick and decent guys. I had all the little stuff packed up in boxes already. Just got free boxes off people on Craigslist. So they moved the big stuff from the bedrooms, office, living room, and dining room. Also the washer and dryer. All and all the move from Cary to Apex was right around ~$275. Completely worth it in my opinion since I didn't have to do anything but show them where to put the stuff in the new house. 9/6/2011 4:37:30 PM |

Called a couple of places. I can't believe the range in prices.
I was quoted $128/hour by TROSA and $210/hour by another company I can't remember the name of since I automatically threw them out 9/7/2011 7:37:26 PM |

I used All my Sons moving to where I am now and they were fucking terrible. Two young guys that didn't know wtf they were doing, rude as hell, and didn't give a shit about my stuff. I bought them some lunch, tea, and water the guy looked at me and said "I don't like cheese on my sandwich" and threw it on the ground.
I nearly sliced him open
