It's all Jen's fault

For serious though, I think it's fascinating to see what women are told not to eat while pregnant in different countries. Like my German grandmother was telling me I shouldn't eat beef while pregnant when US doctors say there's nothing wrong with eating beef. Or how you're not supposed to eat raw fish in the US but in East Asia they have no restrictions on it.

I wonder if it has something to do with quality control of the different products in different countries. The freshness as well.

i think the thing with the raw fish could be the quality of the fish

i have a friend that works for a GI dr. and they "scope" people. she has horror stories about people who come in that eat a lot of sushi.

That's part of it but it also has a lot to do just with cultural differences. I think if Americans ate a lot more fish in general you'd have obs saying, "Well you can eat sushi but only if it's from high quality places. Don't be eating that cheap BOGO sushi!" But since Americans don't really eat fish in the first place you don't have a cultural pressure of, "But fish is my main protein source you whore!"

1. CONGRATS

2. my girl friend ate sushi throughout her entire pregnancy. her doctor said it was fine as long as she didn't eat tuna or masago.

Not really. It's surprising how few people there know that most fish contains mercury and cadmium in it. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they released a study tomorrow that pointed to large fish intake in pregnancy is what leads to the increased rates of autism over there.
