Roku is freaking MONEY. There are hundreds of channels that you can google that aren't in the Roku store.
I watch Fox news live during lunch, caught the CNN live broadcast of the Tea Party debate tonight, and catch up with BBC news live nightly for world stuff. You can even catch a collection of Youtube channels through it using NowhereTV or Revision3. For the money it can't be beat. I use it as my primary TV device (ditched cable/satellite for Netflix and Hulu+) 9/12/2011 11:45:26 PM |

^^Would you say that it's reliable enough to chose instead of a satellite or cable provider for a retail office? 9/13/2011 12:55:20 PM |

Roku, hands down. I also have a Revue/GoogleTV but HD movies aren't available on it from Amazon Instant Video. 9/13/2011 4:39:58 PM |

i have been interested in this as well, ditching cable to save some money.
I just got a new TV a month or so back and it has the ability to do Netflix, Hulu+, and Amazon prime i believe. Would this make the roku unnecessary?
what about DVR for OTA antenna programs?] 9/13/2011 5:10:27 PM |

absolutely. If whatever you're trying to watch is available on Roku you should be good to go. Live offerings are definitely it's weakest point. Fox streams live for like 8-3pm Eastern, but not their nighttime lineup. CNN streams random stuff. However if it has an online feed you can get nowhere TV to put it on for you; or if it's HTTP stream you can just write a custom app (it's like 10 lines of code, and their dev tool is insanely easy to use) for your box to stream.
The only hangup it has is updates are automated, and if you leave it streaming 24/7 it will never update. Just put it on the home screen and when it goes to sleep (like 3 minutes) it will upgrade itself and reboot unattended.

Is the Roku still the standard bearer of streaming media boxes? I'm mainly looking for something to stream HBOGo, Showtime Anytime and Starz Play. Other options I suppose are Google Chrome and Apple TV. I want to cut back my DirecTV bills a bit.
I currently have a Vizio smart TV and a PS3, neither of which can use the 3 above mentioned OnDemand services. I've tried streaming Showtime Anytime from my phone to my TV and was told (by the app) that such a feature is not allowed. 5/9/2014 1:29:13 PM |

how would streaming HBO/Starz/Showtime save you money, wouldn't you still need to be subscribed? 5/9/2014 1:50:35 PM |

True, however a friend has offered to let me use their password login. I don't entirely consider myself a freeloader b/c I've been an HBO subscriber for 4 years and have let others use my login info in the past. 5/9/2014 3:07:30 PM |

depending on your specific needs, I'd look at that new amazon box if i was buying a streaming set top box. 5/13/2014 9:47:59 AM |

it doesn't look like the fire tv can access NAS files directly, you need Plex and not all NAS devices can run Plex 5/13/2014 10:06:42 AM |

oh, i was only talking about plug and play applications and xbmc requires sideloading and troubleshooting beyond the average consumer (and beyond what i know how to do) 5/14/2014 11:50:24 AM |
