"RENO, Nev. (AP) - A plane plunged into the stands at an air race event in Reno in what an official described as a "mass casualty situation."

It wasn't immediately known how many people were killed. But video of the crash showed a horrific scene of bodies and wreckage at the front of the stands.

Mike Draper, a spokesman for the air races, told The Associated Press that Jimmy Leeward was the pilot of the P-51 Mustang that crashed into the box seat area at the front of the grandstand about 4:30 p.m. He said he did not have any information on the number of injured.

The National Championship Air Races draws thousands of people every year in September to watch various military and civilian planes race. "

^^There was a huge coverup, they lied about how many were killed(some say it was more than 100). The race continued as if nothing happened. I especially liked how they used the NASCAR-style corporate banner ads to cover the bodies.

Yup, it hit right in the VIP area. At least 75 casualties. I bet they paid lots of money to sit in that spot and die.

^^^

I couldn't even tell you how many airshows I've been to, and I've yet to ever see anything.

Does shit happen? Of course. Aviation is dangerous by nature. Flying aerobatics, close formation, etc is especially dangerous. There is no fucking way that there are incidents at anywhere near 30% of airshows, though.

i've really enjoyed the airshows that i've gone to - it sucks that this happened, but seriously, are we going to ban everything that could have risks?

or is it just things that have risks to spectators. well there goes nascar - cause what if a piece of a car flies into the stands. and what if while watching basketball, a player comes crashing into the stands and you hit your head and die. maybe that should be banned too.

how about people take on the fucking responsibility and risk of going to this kind of event and if something happens, then something happens.

lordy people are the on the "ban shit" bandwagon lately.

welp, better ban all air-travel, per smc's stance on nuclear energy. if anything ever goes wrong, it better be shut down. so much for getting across the country easily

The chick that was in the F-16 sent to shoot down United Flight 93 was the guest of honor. If she ate it here air shows WILL be banned.

and actually, aren't you more likely to die while driving your car than flying? maybe driving should be banned too.

because there are things you can do some of the times to avoid wrecks/injuries/death in a car... in a plane, you are fucked. Its like saying you are more likely to choke to death than die via a gunshot... its true, but I would gladly take my chances on choking to death over a bullet.

And that stat is usually quoted as "more likely to be in a car wreck than a plane wreck" which is really dumb.

So are crashes at air shows very common?

They had one in Reno this same time last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0IhgMkN3wA

Perception versus reality. It's all about the lack of control like you said. Tons of people get really nervous flying but don't think twice driving a car. Statistically, though, air travel is much much safer.

Fatalities per 100 million passenger miles:

Scheduled airlines: 0.003 (obviously not applicable to air shows)
Commercial buses: 0.05
Passenger trains: 0.06
Automobiles, including taxis: 0.61

Lets say you do get shot... What are the odds you die? Get seriously injured and disabled? Or just get scratched? (tis just a flesh wound)

Now lets say you start choking... We all have choked on something to some degree at some point. What are the odds that it kills you? Deprives you from oxygen long enough to become a vegetable? Or you live but somebody breaks a couple ribs giving you the heimlich?

[Edited on September 16, 2011 at 9:52 PM. Reason : the point i'm trying to make is you have no control over the initial circumstance.]

all I'm saying is I am a damn good driver, and have avoided a couple of wrecks in my life by channeling some Richard Petty shit, but I get nervous as fuck on a plane because I have to hope the pilot didn't sip some Hennessy during the layover or that Paco tightened the bolts enough earlier

Everyone thinks they're a damn good driver.

It's a control issue for you. I am ok driving because my well being is under my own control. Flying, it is not, and I hate it.

I am the exact same way.

You are still much much more likely to die with you as the driver. If nothing else, because there are a lot of horrible, drunk, cell phone talking, or text messaging drivers out there

Kinda feel bad, but I laughed at that announcer in the video.

"Everything is okay. Those of us that are still standing are safe. Please evacuate the scene"

Poor guy. I mean really, wtf do you say in that situation when there's just bodies everywhere and a big hole in the ground that used to be a plane with a stunned crowd.

I think the statistic for those shot by handguns is that about 80% survive.

I know a guy who shot 2 guys at close range with a .40, loaded with good hollow points. He shot one guy 6x and the other 7x, with almost all the shots to the torso of both guys, and a head shot on one. Both of those motherfuckers lived. Now, one has his brain all screwed up, and the other one has to shit in a bag, but they both lived.
