Jesus, someone put a harness on Boston already. 9-0 last night over Calgary! (and yes, 6-1 the night before that against a woefully inept Devils team...)

There is a new hd video out of the beating that pretty clearly shows the suspects face. Should make it easier to catch him.

^ahahah.

Also, Mat Cullen played in his 1000th game last night. Scored a goal that went off his leg as he was laying halfway in the net. Also snuck one in during the shootout.

Looks like next year's Winter Classic is gonna be Wings/Leafs in front of 115,000 at the Big House.

I thought league more or less mandated that you had to after the success of last year's? I think it should be required, nothing but good comes of it, unless they want us to see how lol-errific Ron Wilson is.

I imagine the Maple Leafs with the Toronto media are enough of a circus without HBO 24/7.

While I agree that it's hilarious, how would you review that? On top of whatever extra human error is introduced by trying to run a stopwatch on when the clock was stopped, it's just as easy to argue that over the course of every stoppage during the game, just as much time was accidentally run off on either end of a stoppage.

er yeah, didn't realize at the time. that makes it even worse.

It shouldn't be that hard to get an accurate timer in situations like this, with some kind of software solution or something. Obviously the game should have gone to OT though

But your point is well taken because all they showed were the usual replay angles minus the time and then the overhead goal cam view with the windowed clock. So yeah, if there were a hiccup, it should have been caught.

A software solution for stopping the clock on a whistle? You could engineer the hell out of this and it'd still probably trip over things like the occasional post ring, not to mention whistles during scrums and the like.

A guy with a switch is not perfect, but there are far less problems with that than some convoluted electronic "solution."

no I meant like a way to overlay a (stopwatch) clock on top of their feeds in toronto to time out things like that, in the case of what happened last night.

but the thing about your post is, there IS a piece of hardware like that. most college basketball conferences use it, dunno about the NBA, but the refs can start the clock on their belt-pack and it stops when they blow the whistle. don't know why the NHL doesn't use it.

and with the scrums thing, if the clock is already stopped, it doesn't matter if more whistles blow.

strangely, they don't use this in the NCAA tournament. you think they would with all the issues they have year in and year out

I don't know why they didn't catch that when they reviewed the goal anyways. Sounds like the Moose in Toronto got distracted while macking on some fine Canadian hottie.

Obviously I don't know the ins and outs of the basketball technology, but there's no natural sound in basketball that sounds like a ref's whistle. Hockey has such sounds, so I'd expect that technology might have some problems; perhaps not. Moreover, I think it's the fact that the NHL is resistant to change.

Gagner on the Oilers gets 8 points. Awesome.

They gave him the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd stars. that's really cool

It's especially impressive since it's Sam Gagner, who entered to game with 22 points.

Mario Lemieux had three eight-point games in 1988-89, including one in the playoffs and the night of the single coolest offensive display in hockey history: five goals, five ways.

There was just some article about what should be named after Mario... well, Sam Gagner might have just given them the clue.

This solution was experimented with during the preseason of the 05-06 season.

The whistles used were typical fox40 ball-less whistles that produce an even tone at a pretty unnatural frequency, not unlike what is used in college basketball. The timing system worked, but it was scrapped because the whistles were I'll received by officials, coaches, players, and fans.

Iirc players had difficulty adapting to the sound they've been ingrained with, which was a far lower pitch. Some guys missed the whistles.

There's also the factor that the human reaction time starting play can be negated by the same reaction stopping it. No harm no foul if you consistently hold or run 0.2 seconds on the clock. The buzzer beaters won't be fixed by the automatic system, because it still relays on a human reaction to start. The last segment of play will always be 0.2 seconds longer than indicated because of this reaction time, regardless of human or electrical stoppage.

With all that in mind, the system was also scrapped because, "it didn't sound like hockey". And I'll agree, the whistles were foreign sounding, though admittedly everyone could have adapted.
