I didn't watch but got bombarded with commercials during the rest of the NBC shows. They try to make her out to be a lot hotter than she really is 9/23/2011 11:45:14 AM |

I mean (from just the commercials, at least) that they were trying to play up the sex appeal big time and she isn't that hot.
Just an observation. I'm not not watching it because of that, I'm not watching because it doesn't look funny at all

definitely true
and I don't think dFshadow understands that shows get cancelled based on ratings.

so I caught about 20 seconds of this at the end of something else I recorded.
Was the laugh track a joke? It seemed so contrived, and kept playing after every single line I figured they must have been doing that on purpose, but my recording shut off and I never got a punchline...or is it really just a horrible laugh track? 9/23/2011 12:28:37 PM |

good/quick write-up from warmingglow:
Quote : | "CONFESSION: I DIDN’T HATE ‘WHITNEY’
There’s a great divide in televised comedy right now. On one side are the single-camera shows loved by critics — “Community,” “Parks and Recreation,” “The Office” — that are marked by rapid-fire jokes, cutaways to reaction shots, and (with the notable exception of “Modern Family”) low ratings. On the more traditional side are the multi-camera sitcoms filmed in front of a studio audience that generally perform better in the ratings (“Two and a Half Men,” “The Big Bang Theory”).
“Whitney” is NBC’s attempt to make a comedy that pulls in a broader audience. It has been almost universally panned by critics — because it isn’t meant to please critics. It has been teleported to the present from the 1990s — stand-up comedian plugged into sitcom life — and it will continue to use the “set-up, one-liner, audience laugh” format that draws millions more viewers for CBS sitcoms than NBC’s Thursday night fare.
Within those parameters, “Whitney” isn’t bad. It’s not for me, but it isn’t terrible. I admittedly laughed a couple times during the pilot episode, which is more than I can say for CBS’s “2 Broke Girls” (19 million viewers on Monday). Really, the problem is the network and established audience, not the show. If “Whitney” were on CBS, it would be a huge hit and I could ignore it like “Mike & Molly;” on NBC, I’m forced to accept its existence alongside my favorite shows.
At the very least, we owe a fair appraisal of “Whitney”: it’s better than “Outsourced.”" |

I like the husband guy from his appearance on Workaholics... but I watched ~30 seconds of this first episode and could not believe there is a studio audience/laugh track. Didn't know that shows still do this and it was very annoying. 9/23/2011 1:27:16 PM |

I live with a mid-twenties idiot blonde girl.. and she loved the show. So they probably reached their target audience. Mid-twenties idiot girls who want to be skanky and slutty, but they're really unhappy with that... and really just want to be married. 9/23/2011 2:09:16 PM |

The sexy nurse outfit was really weird. It was supposed to be funny/goofy on the one hand. But I got the impression it was also supposed to be sexy/arousing on the other.
Instead, I was confused and uncomfortable. She had a lot of skin bared, considering it's only ep 1. Like at the end, when she threw her leg over the dude...it was just like her whole butt in your face...and I wasn't quite clear on what I had just watched. 9/23/2011 10:06:15 PM |

Again, not a laugh track. Live studio audience.
I like Whitney, I think her standup is decent, I even follow her on Twitter. I wanted to like this show, but I couldn't make it through the first episode. It just feels like it's trying too hard and her standup doesn't really translate well to a network sitcom. It's like Lucky Louie only that show wasn't limited by being on a network, but still managed to suck complete ass.9/24/2011 8:40:52 AM |

the laugh track/live audience* sealed the deal for my wife and i; four minutes in and we were done. the show should stick around if she keeps wearing hot outfits i guess.

you can't say it doesn't, though. sure there are shows that are filmed in front of a live audience, but that doesn't mean you're hearing 100% reaction laughter. it's not uncommon for sitcoms to feature a mix, especially if a joke falls flatter than expected.
personally, i think it's overkill in the first bit of whitney that i saw and negatively affected my viewing.
