Soooooo, I just got notice that my truck and motorcycle are due for inspection and re-registration. My significant other got his notice on his motorcycle as well. His motorcycle registration is 18.00 and my motorcycle registration is like 48.00 (More than my truck even). His is 1000 cc bike and mine is a 600 cc bike and thats THE only difference in our bikes. We even have the same insurance on it. So can anyone give me an idea why my registration is significantly more?

Because it's the government, that's why. Pay your little bribe and go about your business.

Why don't you ask the governing body who charged you?

It would make more sense.

Same year? Same miles? Same physical address?

The gov't goes by their own estimated tax value on vehicles.

If you complain, your boyfriends tax value will be increased to match yours.

The best I could find:

http://www.dmv.org/nc-north-carolina/registration-renewal.php#Calculate_Your_Fees

Quote :
"
3) Calculate Your Fees
Before you renew, you may need a new inspection, for which fees range from $13.60 to $30.

Renewal fees for your plates vary according to your county. If you have specialty plates, there is an additional fee for those.

As you can see, renewal fees vary just like auto insurance rates.
"

And I'm a bit confused. Are plate registration fees based on tax value? Seems like some people are talking about the property tax bill, which comes separate from the registration bill.

Edit: I've seen some info that indicates that the initial registration factors in the value of the vehicle, but most info I've seen on re-registration only says it depends on the county and whether you have a non-standard plate.

Hey be thankful they even bothered to inform you. I never got the letter and just realized the other day my inspection is due. Why'd they get rid of the damn windshield inspection stickers

Both the plate and the county tax rate are based on vehicle value. They used to allow you to state what you paid, but then, of course, too many vehicles were being sold for $1.

your inspection is due before your registration runs out. if you have a hard time keeping up with it, look at the month on your plate. that's pretty much when it's due.

Yeah but I never think to look at my license plate At least when it was on the windshield I had a higher probability of going, "Crap, inspection is due next month."

Now that vehicle registration and inspection are tied together I just use the registration bill in the mail as a reminder to get the car inspected. So you are saying they never mailed you a bill to renew your registration?

haha. I drove around 3 months with an expired license and wouldn't have known then if I hadn't gone to cash a check and the teller asked if I had a license that wasn't expired. Suppose I should've put reminders on my calendar a bit sooner. And yay for being able to renew online without going to the dmv.

Yep. Same thing happened to my husband and a buddy of mine. Seems they don't have the notifications entirely straight.

Mine wasn't a notification, it was a bill. You had to have your vehicle inspected before they let you pay it. You'd think that they wouldn't slop up when it came time to bill someone.

Well they have in my case And I know they have my current address. Not that that would matter anyway since I'm having mail forwarded from the old address.

I thought you had to pay the registration before you got it inspected. I am not certain on that though

Nope, just did this yesterday. You have to have your car inspected before they let you pay the registration bill.

Edit...
At least when you do it online. Not sure what they'd do if you just mailed in a check before your inspection.

they will not renew your registration until your inspection is completed

Does not compute.

If you're being charged anything else and you don't have a custom plate you need to call the NC DMV and get it corrected. This has nothing to do with property taxes (separate bill) or inspection fees (pay at the time of inspection.)

Not likely considering she specifically said registration and inspection is due and her significant other's rate happens to match up exactly to the state's motorcycle registration renewal fee.

It doesn't matter why. Just pay the damn fees and worry about something more important.
