Hey guys,

It's that time of year again. Time to break out your pumpkins, knives, and saws to display your carving skills. It's a contest this year:

-All submissions must be in by 10/28/2011
-submissions can be a picture or video. They must contain a jack-o-lantern, and a label including your TWW name and date
-the limit is 3 submissions per user. Only one submission can win. No aliases allowed.

The winner will be decided by a panel of 5 judges, and will win a $25 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse.

there should be different categories that you rate 1-5, with 5 being the highest.
example:

Creativity
Funny
Artistic
Realistic

or something like that.

I need to be a little more realistic, I suppose.

Yeah, you're right. It was pretty awesome. But...

They just cut so much off that they didn't really seem like pumpkins anymore. And there wasn't enough with the glow...I thought pumpkin carving was all about utilizing the light from a candle to illuminate your work, but they just carved elaborate stuff into pumpkins and put in light bulbs if they felt like it. We never really even got to see them in the full dark on a front porch.

I dunno.

[Edited on October 9, 2011 at 11:48 PM. Reason : It was almost too fancy, I guess.]

Same. Don't want the mold to eat my pumpkin before Halloween

^^ I totally agree. Those super fancy pumpkins are neat but I just feel like they're too much most of the time.

Man, last year I loved my pumpkin carving.. however, the pumpkin had SO much water in it.

The first night out with a candle in it, the damn thing shriveled up and made my design look so awful... any ideas how to combat that? Clean it out, then let it sit with a candle in it for one night? Then carve?

Buy an LED light made for lighting up pumpkins. I saw them for sale in the drug store yesterday.

"Ah, the fleeting pride of a rocking jack-o-lantern. Carved ever so carefully, but destined to start molding within days.

So, most people have heard of some of the preventative measures available for pumpkins. You can even buy Pumpkin Fresh, a spray made solely for the purpose of keeping your lantern lookin' good.

Here's my favorite trick: Wipe a thin layer of Vaseline along each pumpkin's wounds — in the cuts and all around the scraped-clean inside. This'll provide a barrier between molds and the pumpkin, and keep the gourd from drying out."

I have not tried the Vaseline trick myself but might pick up a jar this year to try out. There's some other suggestions on that post.

We went to the pumpkin patch today and they didn't have a carving pumpkin worth a flip - all they had was that variety with like 3" deep ridges

Anyway; carved it up with a friends 2 year old and a bottle of jack. A good time was had.

lol so I thought I heard some punk kids last night coming up to our front porch to smash our pumpkins. Wouldn't have cared since it was 2am but I went out this morning and turned out it was some animal stealing the little pumpkin out of the big pumpkin's mouth
