My dog has a weird mark on the inside of his ear - its been there for a couple days now. It doesnt seem to be irritating him but it does seem to be getting a little redder day by day. It looks almost like a mini crater, as if a top layer of skin has been cut in a little circle. Sorry about the cruddy picture, couldnt find the real digital camera. Any ideas as to what it is?

I can think of a puncture wound, cancer, or some sort of weird fungal/skin infection that craters. If it doesn't clear up in a few days after cleaning, take the dog in. 9/30/2011 8:28:20 AM |

My first thought is ringworm. 9/30/2011 8:31:16 AM |

From just seeing the picture I have three thoughts. Ring worm, spider bite, or bot fly larvae escape hole.
you'll know if it is ring worm fairly soon if you've touched it, he'll need to see a vet, you'll need to buy an antifungal cream for yourself, one of the athlete's foot creams should work, can't remember which one though.
bot fly escape hole just needs to be cleaned until it heals, but look for more bumps on him.
spider bite could need medical attention. some bites can cause the tissue around it to continue to die for a long period of time. 9/30/2011 8:57:26 AM |

^ That happened to my mother-in-law's dog with a spider bite. The dog is now missing half of its left ear. Looks weird as hell. 9/30/2011 9:08:33 AM |

most animals will show signs of irritation if it's ring worm. It still wouldn't hurt to go in and have a fungal culture done and possible a preemptive lime dip (shit stinks so let them do it!) 9/30/2011 9:17:42 AM |

they make ring-worm specific creams (look for ones with Clotrimazole)
I got ringworm from a cat at the clinic (I washed my hands and forearms, but ended up getting it slightly above my elbow). It sucked, but the Lotrimin AF Ringworm did the trick to get rid of it
as for the dog, they will probably give a special bath and then possibly give him some sort of antifungal pill (it is often easier than giving more baths at home).
Anyway, I still suggest you go get it checked out because there are several other skin things it could be! and if they do test for it, ask them to show you with the wood's lamp (most vets should have it, and it is pretty neat- seems all CSI-ish) 9/30/2011 9:59:20 AM |

whatever it is, I doubt it's going to go away on it's own
just take the dog to the vet 9/30/2011 12:06:21 PM |
