For those of you who are business travelers or if you just need a mid-priced hotel for a night or two which chains do you always see yourself leaning towards?

For a few years I had discounts with Comfort Suites and always found those fairly decent and accommodating.

Springhill Suites is a good Marriott property. Tends to be above Fairfield and similar to/below Courtyard on their pricing scale. Calling the room a "suite" is a bit of a stretch but they're usually reasonably spacious, not too old, and the customer service is good. Plus, as has been said, the marriott points program is pretty good.

During the little bit of traveling I did for business a while back, I also found Wyndham hotels to be good, though they're one of the less common chains.

^^I get travel agent discounts at most hotel chains (marriott, hilton etc)

But AAA discounts are usually pretty good too if you have a AAA card

Starwood brand - so if you're going mid-level I guess that's Sheraton?

Does Hilton Garden Inn count as mid level?

Their frequent stay program can net you some nice free breakfasts and frankly the rooms are superior to the more expensive Hiltons.

Hilton Garden can be expensive for no apparent reason though. Last I checked, the one across from Southpoint in Durham was something like $185/night. That seems a bit ridiculous.

Marriott is my favorite. What my company uses. Smaller company so we just expense travel so I have a Chase Marriott card. You get crazy bonus points with it. Prefer the JW Marriotts and try to avoid Courtyard but your typical Marriott is decent.

^^ Jeepin4x4 - where are you trying to get a reservation? I have Gold status at Starwood and a decent rate, if you let me know when and where I could probably make the reservation for you.

Yep.

Bummer to lose the Starwood hookup. I can request personal discounts, but sadly I can't extend discounts to the world anymore. Such a great brand though. Westin and W hotels are really phenomenal.

I have a list of company rates I try at various Marriotts. For some reason they NEVER check to make sure you actually work for the company you put the rate in for.

The one Springhill Suites I've ever stayed at had extremely comfortable beds. I don't know if they are all like that but damn.

Homewood suites and hampton inn. Gotta get my hilton points... Tried a hilton garden inn twice now but I hate their crappy air beds. Last time the air only went out of the head of the bed, leaving the foot rock-hard and higher. I checked out and went to a hampton instead for the rest of the trip.

I cant believe how many hotels have terrible beds, even $200/nighters can have saggy old mattresses. The bed is definitely the most important thing in a hotel for me. An extra $20 in my pocket isn't worth a sleepless night.

It depends. Some Hampton Inns are nice, some suck donkey sack. Some thing with HIE. I generally try to stick to Mariott with their Fairfield or Residence Inns, but that is mainly due to loyalty points.

I stayed at a great Holiday Inn Express the last two days.

I'm biased toward Marriott; Residence Inn, in particular. Pet-friendly, breakfast included, all-suite properties with fully-equipped kitchenettes, complimentary dinner a few nights a week (and some even have wine and draft beer complimentary as well).

I usually like Marriott, and stay there whenever I can. I don't travel for business, but I do stay in hotels pretty often (at least twice a month). The Hampton Inn I stayed in last was actually better than the Courtyard, and the bed was great.

I do Priceline a lot, so I get the crapshoot, but it lets me try out a lot of different places at pretty significant savings. The bad thing is I don't get my Marriott or HHonors points when I stay at a Marriott or Hilton property, but the savings more than offsets that.

They have awesome promotions and their points program can add up after awhile, especially if you play the game. Swapping hotels every night for a few months earned me 5 nights in Aruba for free

I do prefer Marriott over others though. Their top of the line hotels are still awesome, they have more selections in the mid range (Residence Inn, Courtyards, etc), and are in far more places. Their points program isn't bad either

are your hotel "points" through a membership program or tied in through a credit card of sorts?

Yeah you really start getting mad points when you have both the rewards program AND the credit card.

For example at Marriott you get 10 points for every dollar spent at any of their hotels (just with awards program)

Then on top of that if you're a Silver member (only have to stay 10 nights/year OR you automatically get silver status with the credit card) you get a 20% bonus on points earned on top of that.

THEN if you have the Chase Marriott credit card you get 5 points for every dollar ON TOP of the 10 you already get. Plus a free night at a category 1-5 (pays for annual fee after 2nd year, free first) every year AND a free night when you sign up.

PLUS you now get 50,000 points when you sign up for the card. A stay at a category 8 Marriott (aka 5 star $$$ Marriott) is only 35-40k points. They compound really fast if you travel a lot.
