Other than JJ Abrams collected works and the pros and cons of barebacking, it represents almost the entirety of subject matter in discourse between Jeepin4x4 and myself.

I'm heading to charlotte for a few days later this week. I look forward to seeing my parents, a few friends, a crushing amount of bad strip malls and lots of soon to be unemployed bankers.

This thread is full of quotes to respond on. Wow. I'll just get a few in.

Quote :
"Disagree. Seems like people from Charlotte go out of their way to shit on Raleigh. Raleigh folks never even bring up the debate."

Raleigh people consistently talk shit about the surrounding Triangle. Probably Charlotte, as well. There's plenty of local banter lately on Twitter and other sources directly relating to this. I would probably suggest you read for yourself how much Raleigh people are up their own ass about it.

Quote :
"not saying that Raleigh's the greatest place on earth, but Charlotte sucks. I never enjoy going there"

Again, with what Jeepin4x4 said, and to reiterate what I said, it's always the people who go to Ikea, have little direct experience with the Charlotte-Mecklenberg area, can't find the equivalent of a Neptunes or Jackpot there, tote around the word "bro" about everybody who isn't in some little snobby downtown Raleigh clique, etc etc etc who like to hate on it and every other place outside a 1-mile vicinity of Martin street...

Quote :
"to me, it seems like no one lives in uptown charlotte proper -- unless they are a rich banker looking down on you from their outrageously priced condo. That kinda fucks a city up from the get go IMO."

Have you seen the asking prices for those vacant places in downtown Raleigh? At least the ones in Charlotte have residents, I guess.

Quote :
"Charlotte has one critical flaw, it's proximity to South Carolina."

Will definitely give you that.

I also wanted to add that with the demolishing of all these old buildings (especially the 'mid century modern' buildings that blog New Raleigh likes to bitch about), and the addition of all these new hotels/condos/bank structures, etc, you Raleigh folks might find a little taste of Charlotte closer to home...

Things I like about Charlotte:

-Light rail
-Downtown arena and stadium
-North Davidson
-South End
-Carowinds

And that's about it.

On the other hand, my stance on Charlotte over the last several years has changed from "avoid living there again at all costs" to "would live there if a good offer came my way".

Since you're bringing back ancient history...

...As far as the whole "city rankings" go, rankings are what you make them, guys. I can pull up a list of the nation's top universities and NC State will rank behind some pretty embarrassing competition. Rankings are valuable to the people they praise and they are invalid to the people they mock. If people want to live in a city and business want to move to a city then they will... you know... eventually move to those cities. Call me when Wells Fargo or GE or Cisco moves their HQ to Raleigh, then we'll talk.

Where is this idea that Charlotte has these massive ghettos and is worse than ATL. Have you guys even been to ATL? Charlotte? ATL is dirty as Hell and the goods are more than balanced by the sh*tty projects and generally crappy "city-folk". Charlotte's ghettos are some of the nicest "ghettos" I've ever seen. If you think Raleigh is some pinnacle of fine living, I encourage you to do some charity work around south-southeastern Raleigh in areas like Cherryridge. THEN come visit Charlotte and tell us how bad of a city it is.

Anyway, Charlotte is almost 3/4 of a million people while Raleigh is barely breaking 400K people. Comparing Charlotte to Raleigh is like comparing a D-2 football team to a D-1 team (not called "NC State" of course). Enjoy comparing yourself to similar cities like Omaha and Cleveland.

What makes Raleigh such a small player, nationally speaking, is the fact that they don't have a lot of major blue-chip corporations hub-ing out of their city center, no professional football or basketball teams, and no metro area to speak of. Technically, Raleigh could claim it's a big player when you compare it to populations of places like Atlanta, but Atlanta has a metro area that is 2-3 times larger than Raleigh. Raleigh is basically this isolated oasis of city-folk in central-eastern North Carolina who want to act like they're a big city.

Don't worry, Charlotte does the same annoying thing, except they do it by comparing themselves to other financial cities like Chicago and New York. Ever city will always fabricate some sort of comparison between them and the next biggest thing to make themselves feel more important.

Charlotte has an awesome French restaurant of some sort that's open 24/7 and more Jews.

Seriously though what was the name of that French place because it was awesome.
I think it was French. The decor was cool as hell and the food was oh my god delicious.

^^ YES. That place. That place is wonderful.

^And yeah, Charlotte has a decent sized Jewish population. There are kosher food suppliers there as well, people in Raleigh who keep strict kosher get dairy and meat and what have you generally from Charlotte or DC.

Why the sudden interest though?

lol I don't count Panthers as NFL. Bland stadium with a shitty gameday atmosphere with fickle, un-knowledgeable fans. Case in point was how every Panthers fan I know shit all over Jake Delhomme for years despite the fact that he took them to the Super Bowl and damn near won it. I'm a Browns fan and we would worship the guy for doing that. Whenever they play a team with a big fanbase you can count on a sizable chuck of the stadium will be that team's fans.

Even the governor and former charlotte mayor told them to fuck off when they asked for public funds for stadium renovations. I love the NFL but a Canes game is a way better time IMO.

tl;dr: Charlotte has more Jews and resources than Raleigh

Couldn't find the numbers for the Jewish community in Charlotte vs Raleigh after a bit of searching, but yeah, it's massive (well, definitely compared to Raleigh). The JCC (Jewish Community Center) is... a piece of crap. It consists of a large empty building where there are fairs and events and such, a pool, and soccer field. They do do a lot of programs and events and such, but it's not the prettiest or biggest thing you'll ever see. By comparison, the new JCC in Charlotte (I believe there are several) is FUCKING MASSIVE. I've only seen a small section of it, but was huge and gorgeous.

So while yes, there are a decent number of congregations and resources et cetera in Raleigh, there's a lot in Charlotte that you can't get in Raleigh. Someone in our shul recently started producing kosher cheese, so if you don't mind mediocre cheddar, you can now get kosher cheese, but there are no kosher restaurants or grocery stores (there was one about 10 years ago, but it went bankrupt after a year or so from lack of business). When I was really little there was a Jewish equivalent of a Teach Me store (little educational things and knick knacks), but it has also since closed. There are handful in Charlotte as there's a decent sized market so it's worth it.

bdmazur is from Charlotte as well, I believe.

What a fucking ridiculous set of statements. You are right in that a light rail doesn't equate a good transportation infrastructure - I don't see where anyone claimed it did.

Also, traffic doesn't usually have that much to do with transportation infrastructure. Mainly population and land use patterns.

Charlotte transpo pros: Light rail, soon to be street car, city "gets it" more than most with regards to sidewalks, bike infrastructure, banning cul-de-sacs, etc.

Cons: John Belk Freeway.

Technically? I mean, assuming all of the ingredients have been certified as kosher (don't contain not kosher things in them) and the process undergoes regular inspection by a Rabbi, it can be certified as kosher.
So yes, while say two loaves of bread have been made exactly the same way, same ingredients, et cetera, depending on what else is made in the facility/company, and if the company wants to pay for a Rabbi to certify that food and process as kosher, they're not allowed to put a hecture (little symbol indicating kosherness) on it.

Snootier people than Raleigh
More expensive than Raleigh
Much shittier sporting events than Raleigh
Closer to South Carolina

And apparently TKE-Teg fills his day imagining the concept of transportation infrastructure for a city being composed of the traffic within....and a light rail. It couldn't possibly involve aviation structures, roads, bridges, tunnels, beltway around the city (and around uptown), rails, bus systems, pedestrian and cycling routes, etc. Nope...just traffic and light rails.

Go ahead and wash your face off with cold water, take a brisk walk outside to relax, then come back and try again. Remember to look both ways if you cross a street, little guy.

While you're right, I mentioned traffic and you said it was a ridiculous statement. So, you're having reading comprehension issues.

And RDU > CLT if you're the one footing the bill for the flight. CLT costs more 9/10 times, now sure how that's good for your "infrastructure".

Jeepin, I was just pointing out a negative. Raleigh's been growing too, and faster than Charlotte for a while. Not that I want Raleigh to aspire to be Charlotte. If I wanted to live in a place like Charlotte I'd be in Charlotte
