Got a doe opening day for gun season.
Processed out 5lb of burger so far and made honey teriyaki stir fry with fried rice/vegs from some of the hams. Even the wife liked it.
I set up a trail cam last week and am anxious to see what might have crossed its path.
Going on a 4 day expedition to Northampton County starting Sunday and am pumped.
Goals for this year:
-Load up the freezer -Veinson pastrami: http://makedelicioushappen.blogspot.com/2010/11/venison-pastrami-reuben.html -Italian sausages and bratwurst 10/20/2011 12:57:33 PM

Haven't had a chance to check this yet, but off the top of your head (and maybe cite a source, too) can anyone tell me if bow hunting is allowed on Sundays in NC or not? I don't believe it is, but my brother disagrees. 11/3/2011 7:00:40 PM

i walked outside this morning and some buzzards were eating on some squirrel guts i had thrown in the woods last night. of course my dog was going nuts over them and those bastards were standing their ground. ran in the house and grabbed the shotgun. i keep it loaded with 00 buckshot for home defense so i just went with it. dropped 1 buzzard that was on the ground and the rest scattered.

anyone know a game processor in the raleigh/cary/durham area? I have some ham and shoulder scraps I don't care to grill. Any of you make sausage or hamburger? 12/4/2011 10:52:53 AM
|
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35386 Posts user info edit post |
i see a sign for one up on 96 near zebulon iirc
but if it's just scraps, i doubt it'll make financial sense to take it there. i would kill another, field dress it, take out the sweet meat to grill that night or the next day, take it to a processor and get them to grind everything but the backstraps. 12/4/2011 10:59:53 AM

^What's the sweet meat that you can grill that night?
I typically dress/skin and quarter the deer and sit it all on ice for a few days to bleed it out.
Then I butcher it up into steaks/whatever. 12/4/2011 11:55:12 AM

^^the sweet meat is on the inside wall of the gut cavity back there in the kidney area. it's two pieces about the size of your hand, one on each side of the spine. i think it is technically the tenderloin and the "backstrap" is the loin. sweet meat's very tender. grill it rare or just brown it in a pan with a little oil and whatever herbs/spices you want. hell, a lot of the hardcore guys out west who camp/hunt will just grill it on a stick over a campfire. it'd be hard to fuck up.

it's good if you killed the deer in the evening, field dressed it, and left it hanging overnight to skin it. if the deer's still warm, i find it's easy enough to skin by hand that it's not worth the trouble of hooking everything up. 12/4/2011 3:33:16 PM
