Doing my commute day in and day out I have noticed one trend, if nothing else: Nice [read: more expensive] cars are often driven by those who are more attractive than the average. I can't count how many hot chicks I've seen in a BMW X3 or Volvo XC90. I'm sure there could be many reasons for this and have listed what reasons I consider plausible.

1) Attractive people put more importance on appearance and status and therefore are more likely to purchase cars that reflect that image.

2) Attractive people, on average, make more money than less attractive people. Perhaps because the have always been treated well, which led to more self confidence, which led to academic and career successes?

3) People find money attractive, so those who are in nice cars appear more attractive than they would if you were to see them outside of their cars

I can't decide which. Even if I were to saw its all 3 and attribute percentages to each one, I wouldn't know where to begin. Thoughts?

4) Ugly people realize it's futile and nobody will sleep with them regardless of what kind of car they drive or clothes they wear. Why spend money on it?

5) Ugly people realize that their looks hinder their ability to talk to people. They know the other person is looking at their hideous facial structure than listen to their point.

6) Usually hot people get things for free because the givers view it as a bargaining chip. "You need my money and I need your sex"

7) People are attracted to nice looking things and repulsed by ugliness. It is easier for a good looking person to sell things, to get jobs, to get raises, to get whatever they ask for, just by the way they look.

My thinking is, a lot of "attractive" people only get that way by being very concerned with their attractiveness. They work out a lot, they buy nice clothes, they get their hair did all fancy, they wear makeup, what have you. (This is a theory widely supported on TWW, to hear people go on about how various celebrities are really hambeasts that clean up OK)

Now, if you're the kind of person who's going to be very concerned with their appearance, I have to assume that you're not going to want to fuck all that effort up by driving a shitty car. So you drive a nice car. For the appearance.

On the other hand, if you're not going to make the effort to gussy yourself up, you're probably not going to drop extra money on a fancy-looking car. You might even still be attractive, you just aren't going out of your way to highlight the fact.

For my part, I could be a bronzed Adonis (and I emphatically am not) or uglier than holy hell (and hopefully I am not) and would still drive something similar to my Corolla because it's efficient and reliable and buying a car to improve your appearance seems stupider than hell to me.

Not necessarily true. I know the exception does not disprove the rule but I can think of several exceptions right off the top of my head.

All things considered, though, it tends to hold. And it is going to be a mixture of all three items. If I had to rank them in terms of importance I'd say 2-3-1.
