Anyone familiar with or work(ed) for USACE?

I'm potentially interested, depending on the job/location/pay; however, searching for USACE jobs is a pain. I have no clue what pay grade I'm eligible for though. Any advice on the job search for USACE?

USA jobs is where it'd be. They have offices all over but some are more specialized, I think (ie Vicksburg for wetland research)

I think you would qualify for Grade 9, since you have a MS (thats what I usually apply for) but you may possibly get higher since you have more experience, especially if it was really relevant experience.


I usually go into USAJOBS and search keywords: water or wetland or whatever and then filter so it only shows grade 9. You will have to sort through some NRCS and other stuff but its usually not too overwhelming

If you have work experience you could potentially go in as a GS-12. Just a BS and it's anywhere from a 7 to a 9 depending on the billet. I know where I am we have a 2 yr training program where the new BS kids come in as a 9 and after a year go to a 11 and then when they successfully finish all the requirements of the program go to a 12. I want to say the ones that have an MS but are starting this job with no career experience may come in as an 11 but don't go to the 12 until they finish.

I'm not sure how feasible getting a job as a DoD civilian is right now. My understanding is there's a hiring freeze, last I heard they were up to needing 3 open positions before they could fill 1. They are also issuing early retirement incentives as a voluntary RIF effort. Could be possible though.

Depends on what you're trying to get a job for. Yeah, DOD is chopping folks, but it's mostly admin/menial stuff, not technical stuff.

^ That's not what I'm hearing as a contractor. They're starting the RIF with the general engineering classification and will then move on to the specialties.

There's not very much information available right now because nobody knows how bad cuts will be until the super committee does their thing. My understanding is right now DoD is working on reducing numbers through attrition, and then there will likely be significant reorganization of the people they have left before they lay anyone off.

The chances of getting into the GS system in this climate are pretty slim because the government isn't going to give an opening to an outsider and then turn around and lay someone off from another department that has similar skills. They tend to offer their employees the opportunity to move to keep their jobs prior to laying them off. Simultaneous hiring and layoffs is only a corporate world practice.
