What do I check to find the cause of this? The monitor is supposed to go to sleep after 10mins, and I tried enabling the screen saver for a few minutes longer to see if that would work.

It is my wife's laptop and I am scared it is going to get burn in.

do you have any devices conncected via BT or USB? Keyboard, mice, etc. can cause the system to not "rest".

try disconnecting that. set the screensaver on 1 min and see if it works

could also be a program on the machine. try in safe mode?

Does the screen saver work if you go to the screen saver selection thing and click "Preview Screensaver" ?

This is a long shot but I have run into an issue in the past where Cyberlink PowerDVD was pre-installed by Dell on Windows 7 and that kept the screensaver from coming on. I think there was a Microsoft KB article about it too. Make sure that is uninstalled.

It was the POS mouse, lost her usb thing on vacation and found a Microsoft brand mouse in a box...how ironic the Microsoft mouse precluded MS windows from working correctly.

Going to leave mouse unplugged for the time being and then go find a better one.
