When we doing this? The Saturday before for convenience or the Monday of for it actually being Halloween.

Saturday the 29th or Monday the 31st?

Also, DIBS on the Dead Gadhafi costume.

Halloween night otherwise its just lame.

And walking around in public and going into restaurants or bars or businesses in costume is pretty weird otherwise. I mean if specific locations are having specific halloween events at any point during the weekend on fri or sat or sun, then yeah go to that in costume if you want, but the big event should be on halloween itself.

Last year halloween was on a sunday, and the hike was on the saturday.

It will most likely be the same this year.

I guess at least if it's a Saturday you're not competing with Chapel Hill.

They are on such lock down mode that I don't think you have to worry about competing with them:

Quote :
"
Once again, the plan this year is to restrict traffic access to downtown Chapel Hill through lane and street closures starting. There will be no bus shuttles although Safe Ride buses will operate for UNC-Chapel Hill students. Alcohol checkpoints will be in place at the event, and DWI enforcement will also take place with cooperation from the NC Highway Patrol. The Town will work with downtown bar and restaurant owners to restrict alcohol sales after 1 a.m. Franklin Street will reopen to regular traffic at midnight. All ABC permittees among the bars and restaurants in downtown Chapel Hill will not permit customers to enter or re-enter after 1 a.m.

Because Homegrown Halloween on Franklin Street is geared to a local audience, the following restrictions are in place:

* Restricted access to downtown through lane and street closures
* No special event park and ride bus shuttles
* Parking will be essentially unavailable downtown
* Police plan to begin reopening Franklin Street at 11:30 p.m.
* Chapel Hill Transit will run its usual bus routes although some will be rerouted due to the traffic diversion plan. The Safe Ride bus routes normally in place on the weekends will be available to transport community members and UNC students away from downtown.
* Downtown bars and restaurants will close their doors at 1 a.m. to new patrons. They also will charge a minimum $5 cover charge to patrons not attending private events. In addition, downtown convenience stores that sell alcohol will either close their doors or stop selling alcohol at 1 a.m.

As always, there will be little to NO PARKING available close to downtown, and there will be no place for charter buses to drop off or pick up passengers. Charter buses entering the downtown Chapel Hill area will be directed by law enforcement officers to the outskirts of Town prior to dropping off any passengers. There will also be no parking in the neighborhoods adjacent to downtown. Access to neighborhoods will be limited by barricades and police personnel at the roads leading into them. This will begin early in the evening.

Prohibited Items:

Costume accessories that look like weapons; Weapons; Alcoholic Beverages; Glass Bottles; Paint; Fireworks and Explosives; Flammable Substances; Animals; Coolers "

With Franklin St on lockdown and falling numbers Hillsborough St could become the regional destination for a halloween night street party, but I think that's more likely to happen if its on halloween than sometime during the weekend before halloween. What happens next year and the year after when Halloween is on a Wed and a Thursday. Do we do the halloween party nearly a week in advance? Do we do it after Halloween has already come and gone? I think the consistency of having it on Halloween itself makes the most sense.

I agree, the Saturday before would be the best. Minimal interference over the weekend with commerce would get RPD to calm the eff down and not turn it into the lamefest over at CH. Based on interactions with the officers last year, they were in pretty good spirits about the whole thing - not to say there weren't a few d-bags running around.

At any rate, don't be a d-bag and get this whole thing ruined for everyone. It just takes one story on WRAL to get blown up for public outrage to force RPD to lock it down in 2012. Stay safe and be smart.

Saturday or Monday, I'll be there - just need to know which plans to cancel.

^ lol, "you kids"? You realize a large number of the people on this site graduated years before there ever was a haunted hike, right?

[Edited on October 23, 2011 at 12:42 PM. Reason : 4 years constitutes a long term tradition ITT]

haunted hike has been going on for more than 4 years, and I guarantee that "majority" of old folks wouldn't be interested in doing it anyway- it will be the kids still in school, and the recently graduated who still want to participate in these things.

^2007 was the first organized one meaning it has happened 4 times.

This is the only place I have found this year's hike mentioned online:

2007 wasn't the first organized one- it was the first "well" organized one... I did it 3 times, and haven't done it in the last 2 years, so it goes back to at least 06. It is definitely much bigger now, but just because there wasn't a facebook group or tww thread about it, doesn't mean it didn't happen

I think Halloween makes sense for a Halloween event.

1) Franklin St is dying because of the lock down, so we can steal that thunder.

2) What do we do in 2013 when Halloween is on a Thursday?

Do we still have it on a Saturday almost a week in advance when it'd be pretty weird to be going around in costume? Or do we do it on the closer Saturday, the one that comes 2 days after, and thus have a lame Halloween Hike in November rather than October?

^Pressing question.

I would imagine it would be Thursday, since many college students have no reservations about going out on that day anyway.

How about they make it simple and have it on Halloween, or do all of the current NC State students have a bedtime curfew of 9:00 pm on the weeknights? When I was in college I never went to bed before 2:00 am no matter what day of the week it was.

I watched a stupid news piece on I think WRAL about neighborhoods moving trick-or-treating to Saturday (which I think is lame as hell). One woman summed it up best:

Quote :
"Moving Halloween to Saturday is like moving Christmas to Saturday because you're too lazy to deal with it being on a Tuesday."

And then the retard traffic reporter or whoever he was went on this rage about how he hates when trick-or-treating is on weekdays because he lets his kids eat candy for 10 minutes straight after they're done and then they're too wired to fall asleep
