bradford pears smell nasty, yes. but they don't flower now.

i haven't been on campus in years, so i'm trying to remember if the trees i described are even outside that building.

Not sure of what tree/shrub that is. But I remember Bryce Lane (hort prof) telling a story about how those are pruned at the base to give them the tree-form. It's a shrub of some sort.

Smelly really nice? Those things are fucking awful. There's some on campus along the steps after the pedestrian tunnel and before Riddick. There's more on Dan Allen, Cates, and some other Central Campus areas.

I hated them when I used to live on campus.

Those things do smell terrible. Cloyingly sweet, unpleasant fragrance. Not as bad as a bradford pear but not good.

And, yes, they are basically really huge shrubs. I thought they were kind of holly-like but I wasn't really sure. Had to walk past those suckers just about every day when I worked in that building.

Looks more like Osmanthus fortunei than fragrans. fortunei is planted all over campus.
