i'm pretty sure an american football is the only reason they added that "ovoid" part. would you call a puck a ball?

If the definition of "ball" included puck shaped objects then sure.

Also I LOL when british people get all pissy about the word Soccer. They invented the word Soccer after all so what do they have to be pissed about? (it was an abbreviation of Association Football back when there were a whole bunch of sports called "Football" and none had really taken over as the most important)

Not to mention the fact that the term football came from the fact that it was a game played by poor folks on foot instead of aristocrats on horses. So both are football. In fact you could term baseball as a form of football. It basically means a sport played on foot in teams.
