My car's coolant reservoir is connected by two hoses. A large and a small one that runs the length of the hood. The smaller one feeds into a plastic male tube that has broken off the reservoir. It is totally disconnected from my cooling system and squirted fluid up under the carriage. I noticed this last night because my fan was still running after I shut off my engine.
I overnighted a new coolant reservoir but my question is this: Is my car safe to drive back home and possibly tomorrow morning? I live about 16 miles away and I noticed that my engine wasn’t overheating. I’m guessing this was because I still have some coolant inside. thanks guys 11/16/2011 10:13:06 AM |

In this type of weather as long as you're moving at a decent speed the airflow should do a pretty good job of keeping the engine temp in check. 11/16/2011 10:46:46 AM |

The little bit of coolant in the reservoir is just extra. The engine, radiator, and hoses are full of coolant; much more than what you see in the reservoir. Like smoothcrim said; keep an eye on the temps, but you should be fine. You could top it off with distilled water before your drive.
If it starts to get too high shut her down quick and no damage will be done. It's the idiots who try to make it despite the overheating that end up with massive repair bills.

1) fill a jug halfway with distilled water
2) set securely into engine bay
3) put the hose into it all the way to the bottom
4) instant rigged reservoir
