This girl in my apt complex just recently got a rescue dog with anxiety issues and just leaves the fucking thing at home while she goes off for extended hours at a time. It barks incessantly the entire time she's gone. I've tried to go and talk with her but she's never home when I am. I was forced to tell management today since all attempts to meet her face to face have failed.

She has not been home since 10 AM and the dog has been locked up in a bedroom barking for 14 hours now. Is it time to go beyond management and call the police? I'M TRYING TO FUCKING SLEEP AND I'M ABOUT 3 SECONDS FROM KICKING THIS DEADBEAT DOG OWNER'S DOOR IN!

An apartment is a horrible situation for a rescue dog. Tell her to get rid of it and rescue a cat.

^^That doesn't resolve the fact that she's pretty much blatantly neglecting her dog.

Dude, I feel your pain. I had a neighbor who would simply put his dog outside the door at night. The dog would just bark nonstop until he'd bring it back in, and this took place normally around the hours of 11pm to 3 or 4am. One night, I got up out of bed when the dog just wouldn't stop (it was 2:30am), so I just threw on my clothes, walked out the door, walked to his door and pounded on it until he answered. He walked up to the door and looked at me like "why are you pounding on my door at 2:30am?" He said something like, "Hey, what's the matter?" My response was simply, "Are you fucking kidding me? Your dog has been out here barking for 3 straight hours and I can't sleep!" I complained to the apartment complex about it twice because it kept happening. They said they had too many complaints, he wasn't even paying to have a pet in the apartment. They said they were serving him with a 2 week eviction notice. 4 weeks later, nothing changed...but I gave up because my lease was ending in a few weeks.

Feed the dog a chicken nugget. When I find myself barking late at night unceasingly, I grab myself a 10-piece to ease the nervousness.

^^ That sucks.

I just got into this lease and I just started flight school. I need quiet to study and I need sleep. I'm going to get this stupid cunt's dog taken away or force her to move or I will move. The apt manager said she is going to make sure that the dog nuisance is taken care of quick. She cited that she's bound by Florida law to do so. So, it seems like it's in the apt. company's best interest to make me happy in this situation.

[Edited on November 22, 2011 at 1:18 AM. Reason : I'm sure the dog has been crying because it's probably laying in its own filth.]

maybe she committed suicide and the dog has been barking at her dead body for 14 hours...or more likely she adopted the dog because it "was cute" and now she is a deadbeat dog mom. Either way, call the cops.

tl;dr Animal Control can't do jack shit. Good luck.

This happened to me once, but it was in a neighborhood and not an apartment. The worthless neighbors behind my house went out of town for 4 days or so and left their dog behind.

There was a doggy door leading into a fenced in back yard so the dog could come and go in and out of the house.

The dog would come outside every night and bark for hours on end. I guess b/c he was lonely.

I called Animal Control because the temperature was in the teens and I had no idea if the dog had food or water. They sent the police b/c it was after 10pm and animal control was gone for the night. I mean seriously, we're wasting tax dollars having the fucking police check on a barking dog?! Police left.

Next night dog is barking like crazy again. I call earlier so that animal control would come. They come out and check and leave a note on the people's front door. They call me back and tell me that's all they can do unless the dog appears not to have food or water. They said he looked healthy.

This continued for a few nights and then the worthless neighbors returned.

The animal control people were surprisingly really nice on the phone, and actually were good about updating me. They said according to the law they can't do anything unless the owner is at home. Which defeats the purpose, the dog doesn't bark when they are home. Duh.

That's my story. Good luck with your situation. My best advice is earplugs.

lol

My parents have asshole neighbors with 20 bajillion dogs that they leave outside barking nonstop. For years people have been calling animal control and the police on these douchebags to no avail. Then one day my parents got a dog that likes to sit right by the fence and just stare at the neighbor's dogs. Drives their dogs NUTS. And the asshole had the audacity one day to come over while I was there and bitch about my parents' dog (who never barks, it's kind of freaky) being a nuisance. My parents openly laughed in his face. Karma's a bitch, motherfucker

Our neighbor's dog used to bark a lot.

Now its not there anymore.

Neither are the neighbors.

Their house and all of their things are there though.

Best piece of advice ever. I ALWAYS have a pair of earplugs nearby whenever and wherever I am sleeping. There are all sorts of inconsiderate assholes on this planet that don't give a fuck if you are trying to sleep, be it the deadbeat dog owner who doesn't care/know how to take care of a dog or just some idiot cutting his grass at 6am on a Saturday morning.

paging Toms House

i've had to deal with this before when i lived in Wilmington. my townhouse backed up to a very nice neighborhood and these people who lived in the house behind me would leave their dog out all night. so naturally the dog would bark. i don't know how the owners didn't hear it but i used to call the cops all the time and complain. the thing is - they lived in a 6,000 square foot home so it's not like they were lacking space to put the dog inside at night.

About getting ear plugs. I will, however, I've used ear plugs before and I can tell for a fact that the barking is too high pitched to be completely damped. I am a very light sleeper when for about the first hour or so of sleep, so I doubt they will help 100%. Also, I've been here all morning and no dog barking. I think management has had some words with her. At least I hope.

It states in the lease that if your pet here is a nuisance in anyway the apt management reserves the right to for you to get rid of it or move at your own expense.

I will gladly go to Raleigh City Council with anyone that wants to see the nuisance animal policy enforcement changed. The fact that a homeowner can not be cited for nuisance animals if they are not home is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

then put the dog in a crate at night. or get an electric fence set up inside the house - my parents did that with our dog because they didn't want her going into certain parts of the house.

or just don't have a dog

anyways - not my problem. i haven't lived in Wilmington in 7 years.
