Amen.
Old people also don't give a fuck about resolution. My MIL thinks everything looks better at low res because the icons on the screen are bigger. 11/26/2011 10:32:11 AM

Not my grandfather. We stayed at their house for Thanksgiving, and I am currently watching on a 37" 1080p TV. He also has three 21-23" widescreen monitors on his computers in his two offices, and another TV/Monitor that is widescreen. Plus he has a half dozen PCs. 11/26/2011 10:44:24 AM

My parents are this way. I fix the AR every time I'm home. Technology is just too much. I don't even own a big, new TV. My parents have had one for a few years and I still know how to operate it better than them. 11/26/2011 10:50:04 AM

Both my father and father-in-law did not even know they had HD channels. So in both cases I waited to show them their error during NFL coverage.

channel 3=/=1105
also when I sold TVs for several years, this was the worst conversation (aspect ratio).
further, buying a NICE big screen and forgoing any HD cables (even component video) 'cause it will still look better 'than what we already have'
composite from your cable box to your TV?? Composite directly INTO your TV (antenna input) yes.
Then the 'why do we need a cable box then?' question.
I would hate to work at TWC

I don't even understand why TW cable even offers the SD channels. You know what TW, just offer the HD version of the channel and go ahead and drop the SD version. If people still have the older TV set they can still watch the HD channels because they have cable. Maybe that way you can do without 4 digit channels, which just confuse old people that much more. 11/26/2011 2:29:10 PM

^We're talking old people here. Some are still sitting on TVs purchased in the 80s. Then there are some that would spend a couple hundred dollars fixing their old SDTV when a new HDTV would only cost a little extra. Bonus points if it's been repaired multiple times. 11/26/2011 2:43:12 PM

Good. I thought my mom was the only person who did this. They have a theatre room with a 70something inch and she would always watch 5 because its "channel 5" and 11 because its "channel 11"

My dad can't get HD cable and doesn't want a satellite so he watches SD on his 50" LCD.
Then, every time I go over there I fix the aspect ratio and he complains and changes it back to "stretch."

My dad was complaining over Thanksgiving that a lot of the video feed for his TV seems to be cut off on the sides.
2 minutes later I changed the cable box from "STRETCH" to "NORMAL" and all was good. 11/26/2011 7:54:01 PM

People at work with LCD monitors not running their monitor at the native resolution, much less at the same aspect ration drives me fucking crazy.
I'm just like "GOD DAMN, INCREASE THE DPI IF YOU CAN'T FUCKING SEE IT ." 11/26/2011 10:33:05 PM

lewisje All American 9196 Posts user info edit post |
I have resorted to not only increasing the DPI but also using huge default font sizes on some of these smaller high-resolution monitors; once these monitors get the DPI of an iPhone it will be a nightmare. 11/26/2011 10:36:39 PM

yeah but one lossy conversion after another sucks the big one
it's bad enough when all I can find is a WMA rip and then that has to be transcoded, but I avoid that when possible, instead preferring just one encode from some lossless format to the desired bitrate (or trusting whatever rips I find on the Internets) 11/27/2011 10:00:14 AM
