Well, screen play and director are in and casting so far
Harrison Ford: they want him for unknown role, I'd guess Mazer Asa Butterfield (kid from Hugo): Ender Hailee Steinfield (girl from True Grit): Petra
Gavin Hood: Writing/directing..directed Wolverine
Produced by the guys who did Star Trek.
So far A+ casting choices for the children. 12/1/2011 7:38:58 PM |

I doubt it'd be Mazer. He's supposed to be aboriginal, right?
I'd think Harrison Ford for Graff.
Also, I think the largest issue for the special effects is going to be the null-G. I can't think of a movie yet where it looked believable, and it's plot significant at several points in the story.
All that aside: DO WANT.
Also, subsequent release of Ender's Shadow film.

I think it's going to be incredibly difficult to get that many children together who are capable of pulling this kind of acting off. If they can do it correctly, I'd love to see it. 12/1/2011 10:36:54 PM |

Orson Scott Card is a huge fucking tool and I'd love to see him get a bomb movie, but if they can muster up semi-competency for this I will see it. Big budget would be needed for the appropriate effects. Considering how many times people have tried or wanted to do this and been shut down, I'm skeptical if this will get made.

^^^^ Yeah, Mazer was Maori, but it's not like Hollywood gives a shit about that sort of thing.
^^^ Not having enough good child actors who are young enough was one of the main reasons OSC has cited about not letting the project go forward in the past, so yeah, I'm still skeptical about whether this eventually gets made or not. But if it does, I'll go into the theater with cautious optimism. 12/2/2011 12:43:19 AM |

I feel kind of bad defending changes that Hollywood makes to book adaptations, but does whether or not some dude is Maori really matter to telling the story? Why should they care? Those sorts of minor details really only bother the die-hards and let's face it. That group will find something to be upset about.
We've all seen this thread before. I lump this movie into the same category as the One Star Wars Tree Hill teen soap/drama that's always out there on the horizon. I've got a friend that gets really excited about that project whenever there's an announcement but I never share the enthusiasm because: one, it's officially hit boy who cried wolf status because every time it is announced it's "for real this time" or "already written/filmed/cast/etc" and two, you know it's going to suck anyway.
Then again I thought that about the Hobbit. THEY'RE DOING THE HOBBIT. Yeah, yeah, whatever. 12/2/2011 8:05:00 AM |

also, asa butterfield was in the BBC's merlin series and from what i recall, he was pretty good...i think he has a special look that will do well as ender
and hailee steinfield was great in true grit...i approve

If they do this, I hope they at least film some of the places in Greensboro that made the book. Some of the landmarks would be nice to see (the real ones, not the Hollywood version).
OSC did a book signing in Greensboro a few years back. He seemed pretty nice in person, but I think you have to seem nice at a book signing...
^I've not read Bean's series but I wonder if this is a one shot deal, or they're keeping the rest of the series (both) in mind for casting.

Ha. That was one of my minor quibbles with the book. He skimped on detail throughout the whole book (which is fine, you can go overboard to Tolkienesque levels of detail) but then out of left field he gets down into specific detail when mentioning how to get to some restaurant. It was enough to stand out to me at the time, but it's been at least a decade since I've read the book, so I have no idea if that particular memory is off-base. 12/2/2011 9:40:25 AM |

Yea, he's not a nice person in the slightest. An egotistic bigot, if anything, and frankly his writing is mediocre--Ender's Game is a youth sci-fi series, his insistence that he is a literary god is nothing short of completely wrong. I've been to too many writer's conferences with him to have anything less than spite. His colleagues in the sci-fi field also have little respect for him, including NCSU's own master sci-fi author, who probably knows him better than most others (having worked with him a long time in NC and just been exposed to his general douchebaggery).
That being said, I would watch a good adaptation of the film. And like always with lit to film, I don't care about fundamental adaptations--people who insist on films exactly mirroring books do not understand the differences at play.12/2/2011 11:48:46 AM |

This is during a scene where Ender and Graff are on their way to “Fleet Headquarters”(1) - The above scene isn’t in the book, and furthermore Card notes that effectively NONE of the scenes(2) from the movie are from the book and vice versa. - The Battle Room scenes will be very limited in scope and complexity and there is not likely to be more one complete battle(3). “It’s about the characters. it’s about the relationships… which is what the book is about.”(4) - While on set Card watch Harrison and Asa perform some scenes. He stated that the mic was really close and they spoke in low voices. “That’s because most of this is going to be close-ups…”(5)" |

http://www.endersansible.com/2013/02/20/exclusive-enders-game-movie-still-featuring-ender-and-petra/
That’s Dink Meeker (Khylin Rhambo) sitting on Ender’s right. That’s Ender’s bully, Commander Bonzo Madrid (Moises Arias) of Salamander Army, sitting on Petra’s far left at the end of the table. This person in yellow is reminiscent of the girl from the first Ender’s Game movie still. This might be Colonel Graff’s assistant. These students in the corner appear to have two army logos (a red, and a few teal-colored logos) different from the army logos released yesterday. Any guesses as to what armies these soldiers belong to? Based on the army logos on the scoreboard and the gauge next to them, we believe the scoreboard is showing a battle between Rat and Asp Army with Rat Army in the lead. This circle appears to represent a single spherical battle room. Those colored rectangles on either side of the circle are probably the enemy gates. Remember, the enemy’s gate is down. Those white shapes in the center of the circle probably represent the placement of ‘stars’ or floating obstacles in the middle of the battle room. There appear to be only eight students to each army, one commander and seven additional soldiers. There are a total of forty-one students to each army in the Ender’s Game novel. We can’t make out that list on the bottom, but it might be army ranks or the ranks of individual soldiers. Click the picture and take a look at the full size image for an up close of that food. We think it looks like breakfast. Bonus edit: We’ve received confirmation that the student standing in the far upper right is Commander Pol Slattery of Leopard Army (Cameron Gaskins).

It's not like there's a massive pool of Maori actors that could play the role of a grizzled war veteran. At least they have Kingsley playing as a Maori instead of trying to change the ethnicity of the character. 5/2/2013 2:55:35 PM |
