The red cross has sullied their reputation with me, by repeating the same song and dance after a tragedy. They lead people to believe their blood/donatiins will be used for THAT specific emergency, when in fact its stockpiled for their own vampirish needs.
Dont get me wrong...i still donate. I just dont feel the need to donate after a specific emergency.

well as far as I know the type O is stocked as much as possible at select red cross stations. When there is a shortage in a region, they will send extra supplies and more blood types ASAP, but in the mean time any nearby supplies of type O can be used for any blood type, so that is what they use when they run out of a certain blood type.

how easy would an inventory be? the supplies change everyday, so all they have is an estimate, and Type O is very rare, so it is not a surprise that they are low/out, they usually stockpile type O as much as possible.

^ I think it is a matter of priority. If you have ever worked in a nonprofit, then you know that resources are scarce, there are not a lot of paid positions, and a lot is relied upon from volunteers. The first priority is to have clean donations, so most of their resources are geared toward accomplishing that goal. Then the can worry about there being a allotted amount in each region, but holidays are usually months where they run short of donors and stockpiles.

granted they could keep a tight inventory (if they were a private corporation maybe) if they were not spread so thin

well it is not a highly sought after position because there is a limited amount of raises or promotions to be had, many people view it as a nowhere type job. It is high stress and a meager pay considering what the are in charge of.

except the units of inventory they keep are considered a biohazard. The blood has to be stored and shipped according to strict protocols, that is the priority, accurate inventory to the pint is not.

O+ is actually the most common type in North America.

So, for example, if your blood type is A+ you can receive O+ or O- blood if they don't have yours in stock. People with dat 190% Rh negative blood are the ones that are more limited in their choices.

I never really understood why it's not put on the birth certificate here in the US. Go over to Asia and they can tell you their blood type faster than you can say your SS number.

I did that a few years ago, it's like donating blood except you have to stay hooked up to a machine for like 4 hours while they filter your blood through a machine, then pump it back into your other arm. But it's really not too bad.


It was experimental when I did it, so they call me each year to see if I have cancer or any other weird disease from it. True story, true story.

just wanted to add that when somebody needs blood in an emergency, they probably don't have time to type everybody before something bad happens. that's why the use O on everybody first. i don't think the problem is mismanaged inventory, but i'm just guessing.

O neg is the emergency release blood.

If a trauma patient rolls in to the ER bleeding out, there is no time to wait 30 minutes for the blood bank to type and cross match blood for the patient. The ER uses the emergency release blood to transfuse the patient while the blood bank is prepping type specific blood for the patient.

fyi one unit of packed red blood cells is about 350ml

you can lose 1500ml from a femur or pelvic fracture

one multi-casualty wreck can severely deplete a region's emergency release stockpile.
