Inspired by an NPR story I heard last night http://www.npr.org/2011/12/28/144393900/in-times-square-saying-good-riddance-to-2011 I thought it would be nice, if not beneficial, to say goodbye to some of the crap 2011 brought. Be it bad memories, a particularly sucky day, illnesses, or people and things 2011 bestowed that you just want to forget about.

Obviously we can't "shred" it but we can at least share it and then let it go.

For me, it's cancer, my mom's cancer came in 2010 but after all the chemo it came back in October 2011

And also my size 12 pants that I will never wear again

Bye!

Dad was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer the Thursday before Christmas. He has his first oncology appointment today where we will find out how bad it really is and what we can expect treatment wise.

I had some really good things happen in 2011 too though. It was just filled with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

I don't really want to get in to all the stuff that went down in 2011, but with 2012 comes new hope that I'm looking forward to and a marker in life that I'm looking to make some sweeping changes. Hopefully at the end of 2012 - it'll be - 'things went better than expected!' cause I think it's going to be a little rough...

2011 sucked. Any hope for 2012 will probably get blown to pieces by Feb. 1st.

I'll second the cancer sentiment. Far too many folks got the C diagnosis this year. Not cool.

Also good riddance tornado damage. My brother's neighborhood has come a long way since April, but there's still a ton of trees in city owned areas that are whacked in half, dangling, etc. I'm still in shock and awe every time I go visit.

^We were told surgery was not an option, as his margins were not defined. How is your Dad now, if I might ask?

he is doing pretty great now.

he had to have his entire prostate gland removed, as every sample they took was cancerous and highly aggressive. luckily it had not spread yet. (i think his gleason score was like a 9) he had absolutely no symptoms, but his PSA skyrocketed from the year before so thats why they did the biopsy. they did the surgery so quickly because of how aggressive the cancer was. he had it done at duke using that da vinci robot.

he still has some incontinence issues, but it's not nearly as bad as right after the surgery. there is no sign of cancer now.

(although now i get to look forward to prostate exams starting at like age 40 there was no prior family history of prostate cancer in either of my parents families.)

Thank you. That really helps, and I really appreciate the response. My Dad isn't even 50 yet, so they just took the PSA level at a regular checkup "just in case."

yeah dad was like 59 when he got diagnosed. he was going in for a different surgery, so they just told him to go ahead and get his PSA/colonoscopy done earlier than usual so he wouldn't have to do it afterwards. that was pretty damn lucky.

i know there are quite a few different treatment options for prostate cancer and have known guys who have done both radiation and hormone therapy and are doing fine now. i guess it all depends on what type of cancer and how bad it is.

good luck to your dad.

Goodbye to the crappy job!

And along with it, the depression and sickness that came with it. I went to the gym every day, just to get the bad energy from work out, eventually making the gym feel like a chore too. I came down with random crazy sickness such like Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease and Shingles after never even having the flu.

But I now have a new job and my quality of life has improved overall because of it! Woohoo!

That sucks. My father-in-law had this a few years ago. They took out his entire prostate. Now he's doing alright.

There's lots of things I'd like to forget about 2011 but there were some great things as well. A very tumultuous year.

Good riddance. Finally got a new job that will allow me to live on my own again. Nothing quite like growing as an adult for 5 years, only to have a lot of it taken away by flying back to the parent's nest. It's remarkable how fast you regress when in that situation.
