This thread was made so as to not ruin the Southern Food thread.

getting back to the topic at hand.

Maryland is NOT a southern state. Sure it was in the 1850s. Now? No

cary is in NC, so therefore NC is NOT a southern state. most of the sports bars around here are overrun with Steelers fans, so we must be in the rust belt.

I like to reference the "Sweet Tea Line" for discussions about demarcations between north and south.

I've always felt a certain way about where the south "begins", and that more or less lines up with the Sweet-Tea Line, interestingly enough.

But essentially:

The issue is that there are multiple overlapping definitions of what the south is (cultural, linguistic, economic, etc.). Hundreds of definitions and people try to draw one single hard line. And then they get on the internet and argue about it like they know what they're talking about.

I took Modern Southern History or some shit so back off me.

Hahaha. I love it! I was just about to say something to that effect before I saw the map.

^^That's interesting that the northeast corner of NC is so dense, but it drops off so rapidly immediately at the VA state line. The same with the south-southeast portion of West Virginia.

Hm. Weird.

I consider southern VA/WV to be where the south starts. Fuck the Mason-Dixon line bullshit

Anyone that has ever been to Baltimore can attest to the fact that those people are clearly Yankees

i'd say probably where ever people have southern accent = southern. i don't agree w/ the mason dixon line or sweet tea thing bc a big chunk of texas doesn't have sweet tea, and i've gotten sweet tea at a mcdonalds in southern CA before.
