Quote :
"Raleigh, N.C. — A Wake County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a couple’s 3-year-old dog Wednesday night while searching for a runaway teenager.

John and Linda Super say two deputies came to their home on King Circle, looking for a 15-year-old neighbor who had run away and had often spent time with them.

One of the couple’s dogs, Elvis, forced his way out the front door and ran outside as the couple talked to the deputies, they said. One of the deputies shot Elvis twice, including once in the back of the head, killing him, according to the Supers.

“All we’ve got is a dead dog and a lot of questions that need answers,” Linda Super said. “(Elvis) came running out, never bothered a soul, never opened his mouth, never woofed or nothing when he came out the door.”

Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said the deputy, Roderick Belfield, said the dog was barking and running towards him. Belfield will not be punished for shooting the dog.

“Nobody wants to shoot a dog, but things like this are going to happen,” Harrison said. “Please put yourself in the deputy’s position. If you had been standing there, what would you have thought when the dog comes out charging towards you?”

Harrison said he is investigating whether Belfield or the other deputy, Kenneth Edward Kay, used profanity while subduing John Super, who was upset after the shooting. John Super says the deputies were rough with him.

One of the runaway teen's guardians said Elvis was "vicious" and had lunged for the deputy, something the Supers dispute.

“(Elvis) was my fourth child,” Linda Super said. “He was like the center of our lives.”

As for the missing teen, he was found safe and is staying with his biological mother."

^The problem is that this is potentially another one of those cases where cop does what he wants, department doesn't punish him (other times they get put on paid administrative leave which = free vacation), and more cops see this and do what they want.

An even bigger problem is that PEOPLE have gotten killed by cops being jackasses. There was this kid that was killed by a cop because he was holding a playstation controller. There's tons of other cases on youtube where a cop tasers or beats someone who was being perfectly cooperative.

"Potentially" is the key word here. Potentially it could be an aggressive dog that would have made anyone feel threatened. We don't know the whole story. I'm not a cop hater, I appreciate them. I do hate police departments that cover up for criminal cops who should be put in jail. shit like that is why NWA was so popular.

Dealt with a shit load of "aggressive" dogs over the years. Unless it is specifically trained to attack all you have to do is advance on the dog in an aggressive fashion and it quickly gets the picture that in fact you are a much bigger animal and gets the fuck out of there. I sincerely doubt this boxer was trained to attack.

I can unequivocally say I would not have shot the dog. I can also surmise that I would probably be in a shit load of trouble for shooting this dog (hell simply the act of firing a gun around residences can get you in a shit load of trouble).

Look, I hate shitty cops as much as the next guy, but surely this dude has an idea that his boxer is capable of running through them in a doorway? It has to have happened before. I've got 2 50lb mutts and I know if a cop is standing on my porch and I'm standing in the doorway that there is a good chance that one or both of my dogs are barking and are trying to get between or around my legs to get outside. So why would I stand there like a retarded idiot and not go all the way outside, or put the dogs in a different room or something.

Edit:
Holy shit...as if on cue or something, a dude just came to my door seeking signatures to get on our electric cooperative board ballot. And yes, both dogs going nuts barking, both dogs trying to get outside with one getting her snout most of the way out before I could shove her back inside and shut the door.

There have been a lot of dogs shot lately for "being aggressive."

I would say that 90+% of dog owners have half-ass trained dogs who run up to greet company. If everyone shot a dog who came up to them, there would be a lot of dead dogs. It would seem that some either can't tell the difference between a viciously aggressive dog and a poorly trained one or they just don't care to.

Simply the act of shooting a gun to avoid a dog bite in a neighborhood area should be enough to get this cop in serious trouble. What if he had hit someone by accident?

So... a cop showed up to a trailer park one night looking for a missing kid, starts talking to the locals - who, in all likelihood, are typical inhabitants of such an environment - when all of a sudden a bigass dog gets loose and charges an officer. That officer, already with heightened adrenaline because of his not-so-safe surroundings, reacts quickly and according to his training, and discharges his weapon at the apprehension of immediate harm.

that's all that happened here. Chances are the first shot was a debilitating shot that would have bled the dog out, so the officer took a second shot in the back of the head so it didn't suffer.

Was it the cops fault? No. He was reasonably protecting his own ass in an already potentially dangerous environment. Was it the dog's fault? Of course not.

It's all on the owners for not keeping their dogs secured.

^^^^ BINGO...

If it were a human who came running out of the house screaming i'll kill you or wielding a weapon it would have been the same outcome. EXCEPT WRAL wouldn't post cute and heart tugging pictures of the human.

He was there for a lawful reason conducting a pretty serious investigation (serious to someone), and he believed he was in harms way and there wasn't another option.

And those of you who are bitching about him shooting it and not taking a dog bite. Law enforcement goes to work and call to call every single day not knowing what they are about to walk in to. UNKNOWN danger at every call means every call could be their last. Most officers I know don't go to work with the attitude "I could take a dog bite, or a punch, or a puncture wound." They use reasonable amount of force to protect themselves or the safety of another person. By law and training that's what they do. Period.

You bunch of ungrateful whiney bitches. You'll be the first to call them when someone knocks your ass out at a bar, or steals your precious lawn gnome from your property while you sleep.

My mother's boyfriend of 15 years was a Sheriff's Deputy and a US Marshall. After 15 years, I got to know him and his job fairly well. I have to say that I'm of the opinion that he was better trained than to just go trigger happy and shoot a dog unless it was coming at him will clear vicious intent. I'm irritated that a lot of dogs are shot in situations where there is question as to whether the dog was being aggressive or not. I believe that if an officer feels justified in discharging his weapon that there should be no question of the dog's intent.

Ultraspank/axl you are completely ignoring the fact that an officer suddenly discharged a weapon in a presumably densely inhabited area at a moving object. Do you honestly think that there wasn't a risk to innocent bystanders because some dumb fucking pig is scared of a 60 pound dog?

wow, that is not ignorant at all

I will say that a cop showed up at my door at 7am one day, I took my dog with me because the cop car was parked around the corner and we don't have a peep hole. The cop didn't announce he was in fact a cop and he was banging really loud and it scared the crap out of me. Anyway, I had m dog restrained, but by my side. The cop had his hand on his gun and said he will shoot my dog, and I told him that I didn't even know there was a cop at my door and he needs to chill out because she is doing her job. I put her away, came back to the door and he said, "if I have to I will kill your dog". I was pretty fucking pissed at his gun ho attitude, but I understand that he doesn't know me or my dog or if I would have released her on him...etc, but the fucker had his gun out of his holster when I went back to the door. I just wish there was a less trigger happy approach to these situations.

You are going out on a limb because you have no fucking way of knowing that. Also do you think the officer had time to evaluate this situation while shooting at a running fucking dog? Police should not be using deadly force in anything but the most extreme situations. No one was in any danger of getting killed until that dumb cunt of a cop pulled a gun. Don't forget he went for his gun because a dog barked and ran at him...

Blanket statements on the black and white rules where cops should/shouldn't discharge without having any clue what was actually going on. Wasn't necessarily talking to you, but to the thread as a whole.

oh , yea. I understand that dogs are considered threats, I know full well that if my dog ever approached a cop she would be shot, she is an intimidating breed and would attack someone with a weapon. But there are many cases where a little restraint would have saved innocent lives.

Personally, regardless of the policy they have about dogs, I would have taken out a baton/taser/pepper spray anything before pulling a weapon in a residential area (regardless of it being a trailer or house), especially when a breed like boxer (which I know can be aggressive if trained as such) is typically a goof ball, but whatever... they should have locked up their dog I guess

Obviously, this seems a lot excessive but 99.9% of TWW will react like a cop raped and killed a baby if they do ANYTHING wrong.

And it's easy to say you would or would not have reacted a certain way from your computer. But put yourself in an adrenaline-filled situation and the reality is you have no idea how you'd react. I know I don't have a clue how I would. That said, of course, if it is reviewed (as it should be) and he did not meet the standard that those with responsibility such as cops have then he should be punished accordingly.

no, I do not know how I would react in the moment, and that is why I wouldn't say that he was a horrible person, but I do want there to be more considerations/training on how to react and when IS appropriate to draw a gun. But I am glad that we do have a police force that does try to protect the citizens in most cases, unlike other countries, so I can't say that the police are bad, but there needs to be awareness about gun use.

I work with dogs everyday, some of which weigh more than I do (I'm small and thin) I know full well I wouldn't have pulled a gun in a neighborhood. Dogs are easy to intimidate. Unless the officer was on the ground or something, a boxer isn't big enough to do much. An aggressive boxer? please, I'll believe it when I see it.

Any other person who visited that same trailer park is in that exact same situation. A medium sized dog runs out toward them (as dogs often do). But nobody else would be allowed to shoot them.

Why are cops the only ones with permission to kill anyone's pet when they feel threatened/annoyed? Is the safety of a cop more important than the safety of you or I?
