I can see if it were coats or something, but it's not like it's necessary to have an expensive dress to get married in. I don't see how donating them to charity would be helpful. Unless by helpful, you mean bad for business.

One of the commenters explained that if they donated or sold (at a deep discount) these dresses, then they would lose a bunch of full sales...I don't know if that's necessarily true. But, regardless, they have a business to run, and charity isn't part of it.

Plus, I can't say that expanding access to discounted/donated wedding dresses is something I care about.

I mean, this news story may prompt me to start a charity that's entirely devoted to convincing people not to care about meaningless, superficial crap like pricey gowns or "dream weddings."

[Edited on January 4, 2012 at 9:39 PM. Reason : Also, we really need a charity to make sure all wedding receptions have open bars.]

An expensive dress is not necessary, but what you men may not understand is getting married is one of the single most important days in a girl's life. We dream about it pretty much from the time we leave the womb. So, why not give these dresses to charity? Or sell them at a discounted price rather than trash them? There are plenty of women out there, especially with this economy, that can't even afford a plain white dress from Sears. Donating would benefit them, not your normal white collar family girl. And if that was your fiancee, and her family couldn't afford to get her a nice dress and she was super sad about it.....wouldn't you be a little pissed at these people for spray painting a beautiful dress she could have had?

Look, I think destroying shit that is perfectly working is just sad from the human condition perspective, but fuck trying to spin this as "we can help the less fortunate" because girls dream about this from the moment of conception reasons.

Thats some shit society decided for you, to dream about a big wedding. Do you really want to be part of that?

Yeah, and I'm afraid that doesn't make much sense anyway. The kind of people who really can't afford a regular dress from Sears also can't afford to actually have a wedding...

yeah i'm afraid that if your family cant afford to buy you a dress from sears then they probably can't afford to pay for the marriage license either and the two of you should probably rethink the whole marriage thing for a few more years.

WRAL claims it's created a stir locally. I have serious doubts any stir was created in Raleigh other than WRAL posting this piece on their website. How many people had heard about the stir this was creating before it wound up here on Tdub?

The whole article is complete garbage, especially the interview with a rival bridal outfit. 'They're devils and I'm an angel'. Give me a fucking break.

It does seem like Victorian Rose has a friend at WRAL.

And from what I've seen, they really aren't very nice there.

If you going to get upset about something, get upset about this http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/ShopRite-Dumps-Food-After-Power-Outage--132973618.html. Not some trivial bridal dress shit

Quote :
"A local supermarket says it was forced to get rid of perishable foods, rather than hand them out due to a power loss in the area.

The ShopRite on Island Avenue in SouthWest Philly disposed of at least two dumpsters full of food on Monday.

“When I came in I saw piles and piles of cheese, milk, juices, ice cream, everything was just piled up in different carts and they were actually disposing of it,” said Jason Williams of South Philadelphia.

Byron Daniels and other shoppers ran outside the store while the disposal was taking place.

“Sure enough they were dumping the food out, just shopping carts of it,” said Daniels. “Then when cars showed up that’s when I guess the manager said ‘okay start pouring bleach on it,’ they came out with bleach and started spraying bleach on the food.”

Jeff Brown, the President and CEO of Brown’s Super Stores, released the following statement to NBC 10 explaining the decision:

Today, Monday October 31, 2011, a number of business along Island Avenue lost power due to a malfunction of a transformer, including the ShopRite of Island Avenue. The ShopRite has a backup generator, but it does not operate our refrigerated cases. This resulted in our refrigerated merchandise being out of proper temperature for more than the allowable time frame.

For the safety of our customers, we disposed of all affected merchandise and fresh merchandise will be re-stocked tomorrow morning.

Our mission at Brown’s is to bring joy to the lives of the people we serve, making this action the only appropriate response.

We appreciate our community’s concern.

Regardless, some local residents were still upset by the store’s actions.

“It didn’t look spoiled,” said Angela Thompson, a local shopper. “What really shocked me is they threw bleach all over it, none of it was expired. There was food that was still good, it was shelf-safe, vacuum-sealed food.

“When I was in the supermarket, the cheese was still cold,” said Daniels. “I had a 10 pound ham, still good, fresh, heavy, nice and cold.”

Management at the store insists that they poured bleach on spoiled food to disinfect trash containers and keep rodents away.

Thompson still wishes some of the items could have been salvaged for a local food pantry or shelter.

“There are people all over the tri-state area that are hungry and they were just throwing bleach all over the food,” she said. “It was just terrible, it was a sad sight to see on this Halloween evening.” "

Give away food to the community under these circumstances and at best you'll get blamed for every stomach bug the recipients catch for the next month. Something tells me the FDA wouldn't be very friendly to distribution of that food even if it was given away for free. The words "trying to poison our community" come to mind. The potential backlash is not worth it.

You do. A lot of women do.

But not all women, so saying "we" is a bit of a stretch.

Don't act like someone is crazy for not understanding the need for a fancy dress, because it's a culturally manufactured need that only some people respond to.

The desire to mate is a biological response. The desire for a ceremony to celebrate mating is not.

^true story

I have never once fantasized about myself in a wedding dress.

I think weddings and corny and embarrassing and even if I did ever get married I'd be unlikely to have one.

Bleach also helps to make that shit unreturnable. When I was at the old food dog dumpster di era used to try to return stuff they'd pulled out of the dumpster on an almost daily basis.

+1. I certainly would not have a big wedding, probably just a reception/small party with friends getting drunk. I would never wear white (who the fuck am I kidding?) despite the mild heart attack it may cause my mom. lol

That's why we have the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act.
