Hello good fellows,
I will be commandeering this thread this year and will kick it all off with the first mock draft of the year within the next couple of days. If any of you were around from 2006-2008, you'll remember that the mock drafts from my old threads (with the assistance of many other tww'ers posting updates and information) beat the shit out of Mel Kiper and the other paid "experts". Now with the plethora of mock draft sites and other sources of information, we should be able to more actively compare our results.
Thread guidelines:
1. No trolling. I'd like to make this thread a go to for information about the draft, players, rumors, etc, not a bitchfest.
2. If you have new news about players or a team, please bold the team name or player names.
3. Every month I will do a user mock with no more than 5 users. I will choose the users by activity in the thread and value of their contributions.
Any ideas for making this thread better are gladly accepted.
First mock with projected draft order will be coming up shortly

1. Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Jesus Moses Mohammed Luck, QB Stanford As much as a sure thing as he's supposed to be, I seriously question this decision. Assuming Peyton Manning comes back and can play at his previous level, why not trade this pick for a couple solid NFL players on D and draft picks that you can turn into more defensive players and and OL or two? Are the Colts really that far from being contenders with Peyton Manning bacK? Drafting Luck is telling Manning we don't think we can win a SB in the next 2-3 years.
2. St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil, T USC The Rams have many options here. As time goes on, you will definitely have teams talking about trading up to get RG3. I think their best bet is to draft the player who I feel is easily the best fit for them and their current situation. You cant have Sam Bradford getting hit as many times as he has in the last 2 years. The David Carr syndrome for QB is legit, and the last thing any team needs is a young QB who sees ghosts in the pocket, in turn wasting $70M. Kalil is a legit starting LT in the NFL, something that only 15-20 NFL teams actually have.
3. Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne, CB LSU Now this is where I really could see someone talking about trading up for RG3. The Vikings need a lot of pieces. Their secondary was torched all year, former yearly All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson is getting up there in age and is beginning to wear down, they have 1 receiving threat who also has a propensity to miss games, and their LB's grade below the league average. They could turn this pick into something like Washington's 1st and 2nd where they could possibly still get their guy in Claiborne and pick up another solid pick in what I believe is a draft very deep defensively. As for Claiborne, I feel he is the top player available besides RG3, which the Vikings obviously won't draft unless they pull a shocker and trade Ponder for what would likely be 50 cents on the dollar.
4. Cleveland Browns - Justin Blackmon, WR Okla St. Here's where it gets interesting. If this scenario were to happen, which is a possibility, the Browns will need to decide where they are going with their team. They could call it quits on the Mccoy experiment, or concede that he basically has a group of #3 WR's to throw to and that they need to build around him. Cleveland has 2 picks in the 1st round this year because of the insane Julio Jones trade last year. I could see them doing what the Bengals did last year, which is taking the big time playmaker and waiting until their 2nd or 3rd pick to think about taking another QB. As for Blackmon, if he can stay healthy the guy has the skills to be a great WR in the NFL. Doesnt have burner speed, but with his route running ability he should be able to do well for himself.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB Alabama Did you see TB's defense this past year? Yea me either. Ronde Barber is 156 years old and Aqib Talib is probably weeks away from the slammer. Gotta start somewhere. I almost wanted to put Trent Richardson here because its glaringly obvious Blount isnt an every down back. He's Brandon Jacobs with even worse hands.
6. Washington Redskins - Robert Griffin III, QB Baylor I know the 'Skins would love this scenario. They get the great leader that the offense is missing.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars Cincinnati Bengals (trade) - Trent Richardson, RB Alabama If this scenario unfolds this way, there is no one in this draft spot that is worth the Jags drafting them this high. Thus I could definitely see them trading down so they can draft a WR or DB. My guess is that the Bengals, with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, will be interested in Richardson. Upgrading the running game will do wonders for Dalton, so I could definitely see them doing this. On the draftpick value chart, the Bengals would be giving up both 1st rd picks and be receiving back a 3rd form the Jags to make it work http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php
8. Carolina Panthers - Devon Still, DT Penn State This is where the uncertainty really begins. Good DT's have a propensity to get popular the closer you get to draftday and Still would be a great fit for the Panthers' 4-3 D. I'm pretty high on him after seeing about 3-4 of his games this year against some good Big 10 OL and I think by the time April rolls around that he'll be a top 10 possibility.
9. Miami Dolphins - Jonathan Martin, OT Stanford Another great tackle to solidify the Dolphins OL. With Martin and Jake Long the Fins will have a top tier OT pair. I don't see them going after a QB early, although CB or DE could be a possibility.
10. Buffalo Bills - Quinton Coples, DE UNC The Bills need anyone who can rush the passer. A legit starter in their 4-3D packages and potentially athletic enough to stand up in their 3-4 packages. Other options would be OLB or OT.
11. Kansas City Chiefs - Reily Reiff, OT Iowa KC needs to be able to give Cassel time in the pocket, as he is not a solid quick decision maker. Adding Reiff allows the Chiefs to move Brandon Albert back inside to his natural G spot.
12. Seattle Seahawks - David DeCastro, G Stanford The Seahwaks need significant upgrades between the tackles on their OL. DeCastro is the best OG in this class.
13. Arizona Cardinals - Courtney Upshaw, OLB Alabama The Cardinals need to upgrade their aging linebacker corps. The average age of their starters last season is 32.5 and Upshaw is a great all around LB.
14. Dallas Cowboys - Alfonzo Dennard CB, Nebraska The Cowboys DB's have been atrocious for years it seems. Dennard is a well rounded CB with good speed and is a great bump and run corner which is a skill desirable to Rob Ryan.
15. Philadelphia Eagles - Luke Kuechly, LB Boston College Talk about a perfect fit. This is exactly what the Eagles need. I hope for Eagles fans that Andy Reid doesn't seemingly ignore the LB position for the 8th consecutive year (Graham is more of a rush end). 1/11/2012 12:04:51 AM |
BoobsR_gr8 All American 30000 Posts user info edit post |
16. New York Jets - Michael Floyd, WR Notre Dame Their starters are a crybaby who quits on his team and a soon to be 35 year old possession receiver that runs a 4.9/40. They need someone to make plays on this offense, because Mark Sanchez sure isnt capable of making other players on his team better.
17. Cincinnati Bengals (via OAK) Jacksonville Jaguars (trade) - Alshon Jeffery, WR S. Carolina In this scenario, it works out well for the Jags, who desparately need playmakers on offense. Jeffery is a huge WR, so he'll be a great target for the inaccurate Blaine Gabbert.
18. San Diego Chargers - Mike Adams, OT Ohio State Poor PR needs help on the OL, granted their defense is horrible as well. Gotta keep the franchise QB off the ground though and Adams is the next best OT on my list. SD could be losing both tackles depending on how McNeill heals.
19. Chicago Bears - Kendall Wright, WR Baylor Bears need players who can actually play WR, I'm looking at you Roy Williams. Wright would be their instant #1 WR. This pick will make the Bears fans moist.
20. Tennessee Titans - Melvin Ingram, DE S.Carolina The Titans miss Jason Babin badly. Their pass rush was horrendous in 2011, probably one of the worst in the league, so Ingram is a good fit.
21. Cincinnai Bengals Jacksonville Jaguars (trade) - Andre Branch, DE Clemson The Jags seemingly spend a high draft pick on D-Linemen every year and come up empty. Branch is likely the best DE left on the board and he fills a definite need.
22. Detroit Lions - Zebrie Sanders, OT FSU The Lions need to address the CB and LB positions this draft but with Jeff Backus's contract up and him suffering a serious injury against the Saints, the Lions must address protecting Stafford. Sanders is the best OT left on my board
23. Cleveland Browns (Via ATL) - David Wilson, RB Va. Tech The Browns need to keep loading up on offense. Hillis wont be back and Hardesty isnt the answer. If Wilson declares, I could see him going here.
24. Pittsburgh Steelers - Vontaze Burfict, ILB Arizona State James Farrior is 37. Burfict will be the next great Steeler LB, as he's perfect playing ILB in the Steelers' 3-4.
25. Denver Broncos - Dontari Poe, DT Memphis The Broncos desparately need a solid NT for their 3-4 and Dontari Poe is a large man. 6'6" 350lbs large. Should shore up the run defense issues. 26. New York Giants - Dont'a Hightower, LB Alabama The Giants need to strenghten their LB corps. Blackburn is not the answer at MLB. Hightower is a high football IQ player and could come in and start right away at MLB.
27. Houston Texans - Mark Barron, S Alabama The Texans would've liked to see Kendall Wright here, but instead take Barron who gives them safety depth and who could likely overtake Glover Quin in a season or two
28. San Francisco 49ers - Chase Minnifield, CB Virginia Carlos Rogers is a FA and they have depth issues in their secondary. I like Minnifield as he is very instinctive and has a good football IQ. I could see him transitioning to FS at some point early in his career.
29. Baltimore Ravens - Fletcher Cox, DE/DT Mississippi St. The Ravens need to start looking for replacements for Corey Redding when his contract is up next year (he'll be 33). Cox looks to be a great 3-4 end. 30. New England Patriots (via NO) - Sam Montgomery, DE/LB LSU As we all know it'll be very unlikely for the Patriots to keep both of these 1st rd picks, but I'll pretend they do. It looks like the Pats will likely go back to their 3-4 exclusively next year, so they will need pass rushers. Montgomery is a good fit as rush LB in a 3-4.
31. New England Patriots - Janoris Jenkins, CB N. Alabama When you have the worst pass defense in the history of the NFL, going with the best CB available in the 1st rd who has a possible 1st rd grade isnt a bad thing.
32. Green Bay Packers - Lamar Miller, RB Miami Ryan Grant is a FA and there is no reason to re-sign him. James Starks hasnt shown he can handle the workload for an entire season, so I could see the Packers hedging here and addressing the D-Line in rd 2 &3. 1/11/2012 12:05:18 AM |

Is pure shit logic. The Colts were worthless without Manning, just like any team in the NFL is. It's a QB league. Any other part is interchangeable. And Manning has a NERVE injury. He might never play again, he might be 100% next year, who the fuck knows. That's why it's a nerve injury. Either way the obvious decision is to cut him before he gets his $28 million roster bonus and take the guy guaranteed to start for the next 15 years.

A) $70MM isn't the fee for a #1 QB anymore, it's half that. Did you miss the whole NFL lockout thing?
B) Old school big armed pocket passers can't survive in this NFL. This isn't the Drew Bledsoe, Kerry Collins, Jeff George era if you haven't noticed. Accuracy and mobility are the keys to success in the NFL today. Brady, Brees, etc are the rule... the Stafford big armed QB breed is dying fast because they almost never make it through a full season.1/11/2012 4:11:13 AM |

I think Blackmon falls some, possibly to the Panthers (not saying they take him, just sayin)
He's a beast on the field but he's probably not gonna time well in Indy. I've heard he runs in the 4.6 range. He's also built more like a SS than a WR at 6'1 215 ... reminds me of a slightly-smaller Anquan Boldin. Not saying that's a bad thing, just not what you'd expect for a WR predicted to go in the Top 5.

You should probably do some fucking research before you start calling people out. Bradford was signed about 2 years ago which is 1 year before the lockout.
Bradford's contract is 6yrs 76 million with 50mil guaranteed

Yea, that whole negotiation thing in the lockout... well it created a capped/slotted type of system for rookie salaries. Cam Newton's class is the first one's subject to this so Sam Bradford obviously precedes it.
Sam Bradford has a 6 year, $78M contract, $50M guaranteed. Cam Newton has a 4-year, $22M fully guaranteed contract.
The cost of drafting a QB #1 overall is quite clearly significantly lower now. 1/11/2012 11:12:04 AM |
