Eventually, jailers discovered the .38 caliber handgun in his cell. "

This is very hard to believe. Butt it seems like this is the kind of thing that career criminals may actually train for/practice. If you've got the free time, why not do some daily work on slowly expanding your ability to conceal contraband?
