I'm curious as to how pervasive this is. The subject came up during a commercial for whatever garbage Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton are putting out right now. The ad claimed the audience spontaneously stood and cheered during the movie, which true-or-not, made me wonder if and how much this actually happens.

The only time I remember applause during a movie was when they released the special editions of Star Wars in the late 90s. We went to watch for my birthday party and most of the audience applauded after the Death Star was blown up. There was a time in India where I saw a film and they cheered a lot when the big movie stars appeared, but that's India so it doesn't really count

What are your experiences with this phenomenon?

People would do this shit at the end of Harry Potter (and many other big movies I have seen)

I was tempted to do it during Lissbeth's vengeance scene in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Was it as bad as the original? That made me wince when she kicked him in the butt with a dildo shoved up in there.

Wow. The ads make that movie looks absolutely terrible.

When I saw Rookie of the Year in the theater, the audience cheered for each of the final outs in the climax of the movie.

Yeah, this is my only real experience with the cheering but I never go to movies until they've been out for a while so I'm never part of the super enthusiastic movie-goer crowd.

My wife has been to every HP on opening night but the last one was the first I had ever gone with her to. I was pissed off the entire time because it was more than just the end, which I expected with it being the last movie and all. I actually counted and there were 12 instances of sustained cheering/clapping during the movie.

Standing and clapping because Ron kisses Hermione is a bit much.

My brother and his wife went to see Sherlock Holmes 2 and said everyone cheered after the movie...I went and saw it and no one cheered. I always thought it was kind of lame to cheer after the movie. It's not like the director and actors are there to appreciate the applause.

This is only acceptable for certain things where the experience is more than just the movie itself.

Something like Rocky Horror or bad B movie replay where the experience is richer for acting out in the theatre.

Snakes on a A Plane, opening night at Mission Valley was great. Bunch of liquored up college students. We all cheered at the motherfucking snakes/motherfucking plane line.

Personally I like to warn the foolish white women not to go into suspicious rooms as loudly as possible in order to dissuade them from carelessly wasting their life by stumbling into some masked ruffian.

Went and saw the 2nd twilight movie in theaters and the part where Jacob takes his shirt off to give it to Bella for the blood, the crowd went wild screaming...

I can't believe I just admitted that.

I saw inglorious bastards in theater twice because 2 sets of friends I know saw it, and I figured I could watch it again.

The first time, was awesome, and was at the mission valley theater (beer!) and a lot of college age kids. Everyone laughed when people were hacked and murdered, cheering obscene things, etc..

then I watched it in what I would call a 'regular' theater, that was a bit more depressing, people were sad like we were watching schindler's list, granted the material is graphic and based on real world events, but someone busted out crying.. blah

Also the departed was way more entertaining at mission valley, at the end by the time 5 or so people were back to back shot in the head, people were laughing, then when decaprio got shot the theater erupted and people were throwing popcorn

way better at mission valley WITH the cheering and laughing

The experience I was going to talk about in support of crowd reactions refers to Snakes on a Plane.

But I see it's already been addressed.

That movie was a crowd-pleaser in Greenville, for a multitude of reasons.

pretty sure I let out an oh shit for the AA-12 scene in the expendables.

I like when the audience gets into a movie.

clapping when it's over is pretty lame though.

aph319 - yeah, it was pretty bad. I think they had her wearing steel toe boots because they definitely had a loud *DING* sound effect when she kicked it. My fiance' jumped and immediately whispered "oh dear lord, I think she got him back worse" haha

haven't read the whole thread, but, in response to the title, I'm totally 100% against doing this

odds are someone from the production of the film is not in attendance during that showing, so who the fuck are you clapping for

I don't usually clap and all that, but I do not hold back on an "OH SHIT!" or raucous laughter at arguably inappropriate moments. If you hear some dude all like "OH MY FUCKIN' GOD WHAT THE FUCK" at Mission Valley, that is probably me.

when we went to see Spider-Man 2, it got to the scene where Peter's aunt runs upstairs after he tells her he could have saved his uncle

B0j0s and I have the same sense of humor and were thinking the same thing, but he went ahead and said "BANG!"

it was one of those scenes were some movies have the person that runs upstairs shoot themself lol

so we both busted out laughing

So I went to the screening of Red Tails tonight, and IMMEDIATELY thought of this thread after the first applause in the movie. I was laughing so hard because EVERYONE was vocal during the movie.

While watching the latest Star Trek movie, the whole theatre applauded when Leonard Nimoy first appeared in the movie. But I guess that is what happens when a bunch of Trekkies get together.
