Quote :
"STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football but was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal that scarred his reputation for winning with integrity, died Sunday. He was 85.

His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death.

"He died as he lived,'' the statement said. "He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.''

Paterno built his program on the credo "Success with Honor,'' and he found both. The man known as "JoePa'' won 409 games and took the Nittany Lions to 37 bowl games and two national championships. More than 250 of the players he coached went on to the NFL.

"He will go down as the greatest football coach in the history of the game,'' Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said after his former team, the Florida Gators, beat Penn State 37-24 in the 2011 Outback Bowl.

Paterno's son Scott said on Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer. The cancer was diagnosed during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness. A few weeks after that revelation, Paterno also broke his pelvis after a fall but did not need surgery.

Paterno had been in the hospital since Jan. 13 for observation for what his family had called minor complications from his cancer treatments. Not long before that, he conducted his only interview since losing his job, with The Washington Post. Paterno was described as frail then, speaking mostly in a whisper and wearing a wig. The second half of the two-day interview was conducted at his bedside.

"As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact,'' said the statement from the family. "That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country.''

This sucks.

It woulda been nice had there been a few years between the scandal/shame and his death.

Instead, it's just like great guy...fired/disgraced/dead.

^^I hear ya.

But, for whatever reason, we tend to be ultraforgiving at the time of a person's death. The timing here just doesn't permit that, and it doesn't seem fair.

I mean, I bet Phil Spector will get more somber respect than Paterno...

nobody ever will know the full truth. doesn't mean I can't make decisions based on what we already know. JoePa was huge there. no way he didn't have the pull to do something about it, and there's no way he didn't know what was going on on some level. dude came up to him, told him a guy was cornholing a little boy in the shower, and JoePa didn't beat that guy's ass with a baseball bat. that's all I need to know

^ it doesn't seem fair that he allowed a guy who was sexually assaulting little boys to continue sexually assaulting little boys. that's the damned tragedy here, not that an enabler of child sexual assault gets his reputation ruined

I never described the disgracing of Paterno as a "tragedy." So there's no need for you to be telling me what the real tragedy is...everybody is aware of how truly horrible his decisions were.

But, like I said, when it comes to death, we typically make allowances for people. And it doesn't seem fair that he can't get those allowances.

I don't care enough to keep talking about it though, especially when it means I'm taken as a sympathizer of pervert-enablers.

I mean he was 85, most people would be happy with that. He should have died a year ago if he wanted a perfect career ending, shit happened because he let it happen.

He was old and had cancer and was the coach of a school I don't give a shit about. I can't say I ever 'wish' anyone dead. But everybody has to die one day, even pedophile-enablers. I hope his family can get past everything,.. and that is about it, who the fuck cares?

I keep saying the sentence "i'm glad this guy is dead" in my head. I can't decide if I agree or not. Seems wrong to say those words for anyone.

I only heard the name Joe Paterno when the stories about child abuse came out.

To me, this person is defined by the fact that he didn't take action when he knew a subordinate was doing bad things with children. Now, maybe he didn't know there was hard core anal rape, there are such details we don't know yet. He didn't put the welfare of the children first and gave a monster the benefit of the doubt.

I will not remember him as a great man, I will remember him as the person who forever turned me against college sports. If I'm ever a huge university donator I'm going to tie my money to toning down the sports programs. Though this conflict I've learned that winning games means far too much to far too many people.

We should no longer create any more of these "great men".

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/education/edlife/how-big-time-sports-ate-college-life.html?_r=1

Quote :
"he damage to reputation was clear in a November survey by Widmeyer Communications in which 83 percent of 1,000 respondents blamed the “culture of big money” in college sports for Penn State officials’ failure to report suspected child abuse to local law enforcement; 40 percent said they would discourage their child from choosing a Division I institution “that places a strong emphasis on sports,” and 72 percent said Division I sports has “too much influence over college life.” "

Oh yeah, and since the 80s the salaries of professors has gone up about 30% and tuition has skyrocketed, all the while salaries of scumbags like Paterno have increased several fold.

The victimization of young children isn't just the fault of a few individuals. Supporting college sports is supporting this. I blame every one of you. It's time to put an end to this madness. Every alumni, student, and fan needs to man up and admit they've been brainwashed. The good news is that now with that time we might engage in local community sports and participate as amateurs who are out there for recreation - just what college sports were originally intended to be.

you're spitting out so much stupid, it's blowing my mind. it's funny you're quoting garbage like this, since paterno was notorious for earning way less than coaches of his stature. he made just over one million dollars this past season. in 2007, he made under 700 thousand. GREEDY BASTARD!

it's also extremely tiresome to compare coaches to professors. coaches lead teams to bowl games, help sell concessions and merchandise, and earn way more money for their schools than they ever earn. (and you could ever dream of donating)

This is a steaming pile of "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" horseshit. do you have any idea how melodramatic you sound? we watch on saturdays, so it's our fault children get raped? brainwashed by sports? you sould like an ivory tower liberal, or somebody that got cut from JV tennis 15 years ago.

bad shit happens to people, children included. sports just happened to be the backdrop this time. but then again, maybe if we abolish major sports like you suggest, the whole world could finally be happy!
