Basically the way this went down is that the girl was dating Roberto, a hispanic, which infuriated her father. Then she got pregnant, and her father was going to force her to have an abortion to save face and not have to have a half-breed of a grand-child. The teens, not wanting to be subject to that decided to run away, but were later found.

The father told Roberto in no uncertain terms that if he ever sees him around his daughter again, he would regret that his parents ever crossed the border. Forced abortion was to happen today, and the daughter will spend the rest of her life as a shell of her former self, surviving multiple suicide attempts and and in and out of psychiatric wards for the next few decades.

or at least, that's my guess.
