plz recommend a super easy proxy program that you install on the puter, not one where u have to enter a bunch of numbers in little password boxes. I hate that.
right now I am using this one called Freegate but it goes to Taiwan which sucks because when I try to watch Star Trek on Justin.tv (rly just to chat with trekkies, not to rly watch the show) it says something like "we are all full up with ppl in your country, buy a pro account" I want something just like Freegate but that uses proxies in America instead of Taiwan. Why can't everything just be free and easy? 2/4/2012 9:03:56 AM |

The first line of your thread made me think you wanted to install the proxy server on your computer; normally that's only done to filter Web content (the open-source Privoxy and Squid, the freeware Proxomitron, and the paid Ad Muncher all work like this)...
Anyway, unless you're using a Web-based proxy like Anonymouse (Germany FYI) or one of the many CGIProxy/PHProxy/Glype-based systems out there, you will inevitably need to enter the IP address of a proxy server into your Internet Options (or hope that some program similar to Freegate does that voodoo for you through the Registry...I know Ad Muncher does but that's not the kind of thing you're going for).
Now where do you live? I had thought for some reason that you lived in America... 2/4/2012 9:28:15 AM |

right now I'm in Jing An district, Shanghai again. I nternet is so darn fast here but it such a waste because they block everything and when u run a proxy, it's a lot slower. I don't mind if I have to do some setup just the one time when I install the software. as long as there are some instructions. Freegate was very easy, just DL then double click. 2/4/2012 9:45:11 AM |

Have you heard about Tor yet?
It's not that good for plugin content (like justin.tv) but it is the gold standard for evading the Great Firewall of China... 2/4/2012 9:48:43 AM |

from my experience of being in china for 2 years freegate really is the only decent free VPN. It sucks not being able to get on justin.tv but oh well! Freegate works better than the other paid VPNs I have used here and downloading stuff is never an issue. Also jealous to hear the internet in Shanghai is fast, its slow as hell in Beijing. 2/6/2012 5:15:52 AM |

I rent a VPS instance in Virginia for $4/month and use it to tunnel stuff at work and bounce some internal services out for my phone to connect to. It's a Virpus vps, and it's had almost perfect uptime for me. 2/6/2012 2:43:13 PM |

Tor yea! neato I just discovered. there is the silk road and all this other anarchy stuff. turns out Freegate really is paid for my the usa gov't. i suspected tht. sigh, the help pages r all saying i ned to switch to unix. FUCK that. I HATE that old looking shit with the blinking cursor. I swore never to use that shit EVER after taking that one credit E115 class. Part of the reason I didn't want to do engineering. what kind of soulless minion do you have to be to not be in physical pain when you are forced to use that crap? 2/19/2012 10:46:31 PM |

g-damn you're a n00b
k first, there are many Unix-like operating systems that have modern-looking graphical user interfaces, including easy-to-use frontends for those all-important command-line tools
next, if the directions you get tell you to use some command-line tool that you don't have on Windows (like grep or diff or cat), get this, it's a life-saver: http://getgnuwin32.sourceforge.net/
finally, all you need to browse the Tor-web should be the browser bundle, which includes a portable installation of Firefox Aurora, Polipo, and Tor, all set up to let you browse over Tor with no further configuration: https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en (some special care is needed to keep any extensions installed if you decide to upgrade, because TBB does not upgrade itself; however, because plugin content cannot be fetched through Tor, it should be more secure against typical browser vulnerabilities) 2/19/2012 10:59:19 PM |
