My unusual greatest fear is grasshoppers.

(of course, I'm afraid of dying or getting cancer, etc.)

But I gotta go with grasshoppers. Like screaming, hyperventilating, horribly afraid.

Dark enclosed spaces. Specifically, dark, enclosed, moist spaces.

Getting in a traffic accident as a pedestrian.

For some reason, I have no real innate fear of heights, traffic accidents, or generally blunt trauma. Something about the accidentalness of it makes it seem okay to me. There's a difference between something hurting and triggering a fight or flight response.

What really scares the shit out of me:

- needles... and to some extent doctors themselves
- torture
- humiliation

- The person I care about getting suddenly/unexpectedly angry with me, saying "fuck this, I'm out" and disappearing.

Or I guess to be traditional:
- Heights in which the barrier is below waist level or something. As in I'm not afraid of hanging out on top of the empire state building, but if I were washing it's windows I would be shaking.
- Cockroaches
- Air Raid Sirens

I can't really think of anything specific. Definitely not bugs or spiders or animals or heights. The only thing I can think of right now is being in the wilderness w/o something to start a fire and/or no water source. That's not really a fear though, just what would be most concerning.

^I gotta agree, I've always thought that the most terrifying death would be that of being eaten alive. I have a fear of swimming in the ocean because I can't help but think of sharks. I love sharks, but I can't stand the thought of swimming with them. My friends also give me a hard time because I will not approach large, wild crocodilians beyond a reasonable point, but I'm not thinking of applying for a Darwin award anytime soon. Some people rebut by referring to the fact I work with venomous snakes on a regular basis...but I always wear protection. There's not much in terms of protection from something that can bite/tear a limb off.

Good point.

We've all failed to do justice to the possibility of living with a permanent and horrific deformity or chronic pain.

If I'm perfectly honest? Women. Specifically hitting on them.

"Don't be such a pussy, Grumpy, what's the worst that can happen, they say no?"

No. That is not the worst that can happen. They can try to sue you for libel, they can rob you blind, and they can tell their large brother (who you subsequently find out deals crack -- seriously, crack) to beat the shit out of you. They can launch conspiracies to kill you. With fire. (Which I'm not normally afraid of, except in the specific circumstance of someone attempting to commit arson upon my person)

You know what's never done any of those things to me? Heights or spiders.

But, to return to the question at hand...also heights and spiders.

Snakes in the wild.

I'm ok seeing them in captivity or even touching one if a friend has one as a pet.

But for the love of god, if I come across one in the wild, I run in the opposite direction screaming like a little bitch.

Sometimes small amounts of pee may be involved.

Two things in no particular order....

Being a failure in the eyes of my parents. They have done so much for me and given me so much I absolutely do not want to disappoint them. They don't expect me to do anything impossible or anything like that but they expect me to be a decent person, take care of my family, etc.

The other is getting old to the point where I can't handle myself. Saw my grandparents go through this and a simple heart attack a couple of years earlier would have saved them so much pain and suffering. I don't ever want to go through that or see my wife go through that.

I don't like bugs or heights but those things don't truly terrify me. Death doesn't scare me either, if something happens to me and I die young so be it, I would more feel bad for my family since dealing with an untimely death would be real hard.

Is the teeth thing serious? Because that actually happened to me as a child.

Biggest fear? Probably losing the ability to communicate but still be able to understand others. Kind of like being trapped inside myself. I'd go nutso. But it's an irrational fear

I'm also scared of being kidnapped or attacked especially when I travel alone, which is a lot.

nobody wants to be tortured to death or mauled by a wild animal, but are these things that you people seriously worry about frequently?

the teeth thing is something I think about every time I run up stairs lol

yesterday I was extra careful walking up the Lincoln Memorial stairs since they are stone/marble, slippery and might do more damage

well i was really meaning the things that you never or almost never encounter, like a situation in which you'd be tortured or wild animals running you down.

yes, I am truly concerned about these things. I do spend a lot of time in dense forests.

I saw an 11 ft anaconda in the outdoors in Brazil once, that did not bother me.

I am truly scared of being mauled, I have been attacked by dogs once when I was a kid, maybe that is where it started.

My biggest fear is that the singularity may be stifled by politicians/ruling class long enough that I may not get to witness is. Though it's not an event that can be stopped, I think that it can still be delayed significantly at this point.

My second biggest fear is that this shift in a middle class uprising may not achieve its true potential.

I'm pretty damn scared of heights unless I'm tied I to something or can grab onto something solid. I'll dangle from a rope 50 feet in the air and use a chainsaw, but I wouldn't walk across a 2 foot wide beam 50 feet in the air without rope or a rail. Idk if it's really a fear or acknowledging that my balance sucks.

I'm kinda fearful that an idiot will cause a wreck that ends up getting me hurt.
Remember the 18 wheeler that crossed the median on I-40 a few years ago? The dude driving down the opposing lanes who ran into the 18 wheeler's fuel tank was my friend. The whole thing was caused by some dude who had a history of changing lanes without checking first and crossing the center line. That shit pisses me off so much I'll harass people on the road if i see them doing stupid shit like that.

how do you figure out that someone has a "history" of this?

it pisses you off so much that you'll go out and do things that are more likely to cause accidents. what in the flying fuck are you thinking?
