yeah. My dad stopped over 12 years ago and what helped him during that time was tootsie rolls and mountain dew.

He is now a diabetic.

Pick your next poison.

Coffee.

I didn't quit smoking. I switched, that's all.

I was a pack+/day smoker from ages 19-22 and then tapered down to where I was only smoking occasionally at age 25-26. However now that I've totally quit it is waaaaaaaaaay tougher when I've been drinking. I can't even tell you how many times in the last few months I've really, really wanted a cig out at the bar or just at home on the weekend when I down a 12 pack watching the game.

I suggest a new addiction like heavier drinking or snorting bath salts.

Wellbutrin helped me quit cigs about 5.5 years ago. It took me about another year to give up nicorette.

I had successfully stopped for 4 months until my surgery recently. I didn't want to overdo it on the pain killers so I smoked to take the edge off again.

smoked from 16-21 and was up to around a pack and a half a day and just quit cold turkey, not even a puff in 3.5 years. you really have to just convince yourself it's something you just don't do anymore. period. no drags, no smoking because your dog died or you wrecked your car, no excuses. At least for me, it's an all or nothing type of thing with cigarettes, although I will puff a nice cigar on very special occasions. Last time was at the Belk Bowl, before that...?

a lot of people have found electronic cigarettes help more than any other nicotine replacement therapy. Of course they are addictive too but at least there is no carcinogens in them

I actually quit with the e-cig. I started using it in the beginning of November, and since then I smoked "analogs" maybe two or three times. In fact, just yesterday I found an old pack and popped it open. Lit one up and took maybe half a dozen drags before I put it out and threw it all in the trash. A lot of people have said that if you get away from it long enough, it just smells and tastes disgusting. I'm inclined to agree.

I've got a whole bunch of different e-cig parts and flavored liquid, and through a bit of experimentation, I managed to find something that I liked even better than cigs. Another nice thing about the e-cig is that you can get the liquid in varying nicotine strengths, so it's easy to step down. I went from 24mg->18->11->6mg over the course of a couple months, and by January I was barely using it at all. Even now, I just pick it up when I'm driving, and otherwise go days without it.

I'm convinced the the e-cig worked so well for me because I was more addicted to the routine and physical action of smoking than the chemicals in it. With the e-cig, you go through all the motions of smoking and get the sensation of smoking, but without sucking up actual burnt material. Not to mention that blueberries, root beer, cheesecake, &c. tastes a whole lot nicer than burning plants.

I will go days without smoking or only having one that I hardly enjoy

and then sometimes I'll go to work and smoke like half a pack or more

Smoking is not good after surgery... it restricts blood flow and can make healing happen a lot slower.
