Was it ever determined why SMC so hated Tesla?

They still haven't come close to building cars for a profit, so I'm not sure how cocky I'd get just yet.

How long did it take Amazon to earn a profit?

amazon had volume and profits, they just reinvested (and still do) all of them in the name of expansion

Elon blew up his Twitter last night tweeting about floors and shit. He claims he was sober but liked a couple comments about being high. Apparently chilling on Twitter is how Tony Stark spends his birthday. At least he wasn't trashing his place in an Iron Man suit. Yet.

From where does the electricity come to charge the batteries of these cars?

There's this cool thing called the power transmission grid. It allows for the exchange of electrical energy all over the country from a variety of sources: coal-burning power plants, solar energy farms, nuclear power stations, etc.

I'm getting the supercharger installed in the garage of my house. Probably won't see delivery of my model 3 until mid 2018 though.

Smart - prices probably won't come down as mass quantities of 3s are sold

I think I would prefer to have electric cars and chargers in a detached garage. Know what I mean? Still pulling for them to gain market acceptance and have the needed infrastructure built out.

One can get a used Model S with the big battery now for $44K: https://www.tesla.com/used/5YJSA1DN2DFP04340

Car would have been ~$90K new!

There are a few with the older autopilot and even a few with the newer hardware.

Don't lose your head over the autopilot...

there are a few with autopilot when i looked a few weeks ago but i thought none of them got down to sub 60k

after having my subaru with eyesight for 1.5yr i don't think going back to a car without at least adaptive cruise control down to 0 is possible - we almost bought a 2018 honda odyssey for my wife a few weeks ago and stopped short because adaptive cruise control cuts off at 22mph and stop and go is when i want it the most

No interest in the Tesla Semi?

Or the new Roadster which was a complete surprise, and will have unheard of acceleration numbers for a production car?

^exactly.

I feel like this is just a distraction away from the train wreck that is Model 3 production.

As far as it's merits as a hyper car, without further information it looks incredibly one dimensional.

And it's not a roadster, but any definition.

"I feel like this is just a distraction away from the train wreck that is Model 3 production."

Exactly. He is having to pump it out a lot more often as a form of distraction. The Semi and the new Roadster were announced in the same week or close.

I wish he had to get his duck punched everytime he tweets a forecast.

The Semi looks sweet... I would want one if I was a trucker!

Oh, and there is more:

Even quicker?

To see it accelerate, click below. Go to exact 57 minute mark in first video. Second video is just 6 sec long.

https://insideevs.com/watch-new-tesla-roadster-accelerate-lightning-quick-video

Oh, he also teased this:

Quote :
"Elon Musk also briefly previewed (teased?) a pickup truck. Not an ordinary pickup truck, but one that can carry a pickup truck. These are the words used by Tesla’s head honcho, who also mentioned the workhorse is based on the semi and that it can be legally driven with a regular driver’s license, admitting it’s “kind of wrong.”"

^ My question isn't whether or not Tesla can build awesome stuff...it's whether or not they can produce vehicles on a sufficient scale, at a high level of quality and reliability, at sufficient margins of profitability. I trust them as technological innovators; I don't fully trust them as a manufacturer and a business.

Yes, ideally they would be consultants for actual car manufacturers. Because right no lords knows they have no idea how to build or run a facility at all.

^^ their intention is for it to be mostly self-driving, the center position provides more relaxation options.

I saw one in the wild today in my office parking lot. It looked pretty good, no obvious defects like the ones mentioned above.

After being a hater for the past few years, pickup my new Model S at the end of the month. Interior has come a long way. Hope the service centers don't get overwhelmed or the company doesn't go bust with the Model 3.

I still hate the door handles.

http://ir.tesla.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=1062670

Quote :
"PALO ALTO, Calif., April 03, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Q1 production totaled 34,494 vehicles, a 40% increase from Q4 and by far the most productive quarter in Tesla history. 24,728 were Model S and Model X, and 9,766 were Model 3. The Model 3 output increased exponentially, representing a fourfold increase over last quarter. This is the fastest growth of any automotive company in the modern era. If this rate of growth continues, it will exceed even that of Ford and the Model T. "

Seems like Bloomberg has them hitting 2000/week by end of quarter. Starting to see more and more Model 3s around LA. They said on Friday when I picked my Model S up they were delivering a record of 180 cars in a day for that service center.

Re: Autopilot

There are clearly fatal bugs that would kill the occupants of an autonomous vehicle, that wouldn't even kill a drunk. Wouldn't trust my life to it.

Tesla is done when all of the new, comparable, cheaper EVs come out in 2019/2020.

Hopefully then Elon Musk can focus on shooting himself to Mars.
