It's more likely than you'd think

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/24/banker-1-percent-tip-receipt_n_1299280.html?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl1|sec1_lnk1%26pLid%3D138350

Quote :
"A banker left a 1% tip in defiance of 'the 99%' at a Newport Beach restaurant the other week, according to his dining companion and underling who snapped a photo of the receipt and posted it to his blog, Future Ex Banker. (Update: the blog is now offline.)

In posting the photo, the employee gave some background on his boss and the receipt:

"Mention the “99%” in my boss’ presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness. Oh, and he always makes sure to include a “tip” of his own."

The "tip" of his own in this case was to tell the server to "get a real job." Pleasant.

The whistleblower's Future Ex-Banker blog (now offline) included additional background on his boss, and some insight into why he would out his gross behavior, likely resulting in an employment status of current ex-banker:

"I work in the corporate office of a major bank for a boss who represents everything wrong with the financial industry: blatant disregard and outright contempt for everyone and everything he deems beneath him. On top of that, he’s a complete and utter tool. At the same time, I’m still cashing paychecks, an admittedly willing—albeit reluctant—cog in the wheel of this increasingly ugly industry, so I’ve created this blog as a confessional of sorts. It won’t entirely clear my conscience, but hopefully it’ll help. I’m sure I’ll get fired eventually. Until then, enjoy."

UPDATE: In a conversation with the Huffington Post, Mike Wilcox, the vice president of operations for True Food Kitchen, gave some insight into how the company was treating the incident since the receipt began receiving attention online. Wilcox said that the restaurant was "absolutely" treating the receipt as real, but to confirm its authenticity for certain, they were in the process of tracking down both the physical receipt at the restaurant and the computer-generated copy in their credit card system.

"The first thing we're going to do is to make sure the server is taken care of," Wilcox said, "and make sure the server wasn't treated badly or insufficiently tipped." He explained that they would be asking Breanna, the server named on the receipt, if she recalled the table and how her service was. "If her service was up to the level" they assume their employees would deliver, Wilcox said, "they would do everything they can to make it up to her somehow." Referring to online comments posted about the receipt, Wilcox remarked, "people are asking us to ban the person from the restaurant -- if more information came through on who the person is I first would love to talk to him.""

If he doesn't want people to work in the service industry with their pay predicated on tips, then he should go to places where they don't do tips.

I get that serving food isn't seen as being on the same level as banking or consulting or whatever, but how does he expect to go to restaurants if the waiters all got real jobs and nobody waited tables anymore?

Which is why it's most likely: A - A fake, B - A joke, or C - a combination of A and B and a shitty job by the waiter who whined about the whole OWS thing.

Most people smart enough to have the means to regularly rack up $133 bills wouldn't be so stupid or short-sided to leave that sort of tip unjustified or to realize that ^ simple point.

Writing "Get a real job" when she can't handle the one she's got, isn't a very good tip and reflects poorly on you as a tip giver. He should have wrote, "Know your audience" if she offended him with her conversation about rich people.

Waiters are guaranteed at least minimum wage. I'm amazed at the number of waiters/waitresses that don't know this. Its plastered on the freaking break room wall. Take a minute and read some shit for once in your miserable life. [/rant]

In theory.

Places like Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays make them report minimum wage amount of tips as the minimum amount of tips they receive regardless of how many tips they received.

How about you show me proof of restaurant paying the difference, it will be much easier.

There's no way to prove you didn't get the amount of tips a restaurant claims you have gotten just like there is no way for the government to prove you got that cash tip you didn't report.

I think all places should have to pay all their employees at least minimum wage, because it's not fair for a (brand new) restaurant that doesn't have business yet to have to pay full minimum wage, when a successful business that has a lot of customers (meaning they're able to afford minimum wage) gets a discount on wages. It just doesn't make sense why a money making business is the one that gets away with paying their employees the least.

Talage, the argument is not terrible. I'm stating I don't give a fuck to show you proof because the proof is in the pudding, but if you'd like to go ahead and prove me wrong, show me a pay stub from someone who got compensated for not making enough tips.

haha, I had a friend that left a "tip" that stated "go fuck yourself"

Of course this was after ordering a drink and not getting anything for 15 minutes so he was forced to track down another waitress to get it. The manager laughed his ass off but kicked him out even though he admitted the waiter was a piece of shit

I've waited tables and I was awful at it.

Even then I got enough tips per hour to make up the difference between server pay and everyone else's minimum wage.

I think I either had to claim 10% of sales or my credit card tips, and either way it always gave me up to minimum wage and then some while being less than I actually made in tips that day.

This one lonestar in durham that i was at for a few weeks did this. It had so little business I had maybe one table a night. They had to payout to me for the difference. I quit as I had a better job that started to pick up again ($100 for lunch).

And no, I don't have the stubs from 13 years ago.
8% of gross 'sales' is what your employer will attribute to you for tax purposes, so anything over that is not taxed.
As for pay as a server there is a 'second' minimum wage considerably less than the ordinary minimum. If servers do not make enough in tips to compensate for the difference the restaurant owners must, by law, chip in the difference.

In North Carolina you are guaranteed $2.13 per hour.

Most servers work pretty hard. As a customer you tend not to see all the server does, especially when the place is busy. It is a lot of moving, listening, lifting, and observing. Tables tend not to pay attention to the fact they are not the only table the server has to take care of. I can't tell you how many times the quality of service of one of my tables has suffered because of another table making me stand there and answer 500 questions rather than reading the menu.

At the end of the day, all jobs have people that work hard at the job and the people that just show up. Don't just assume that everyone that waits tables "needs to work harder". People that go to restaurants need to remember that they are in public dealing with other people, and behave accordingly. Too often people go into restaurants feeling like they can treat servers harshly or poorly because, more than likely, they will never see the person again.

You don't treat your bank teller like you do a server, do you? Guess what, bank tellers do a lot less "work" than servers do. Maybe they should be paid in tips as well?

Most people don't work harder at the end of the day though

Especially not waiters/waitresses

Unless you count rolling silver or refilling the bartender's ice chest or getting that mashed potatoes out of the carpet under table 11 that was dropped by an obnoxious infant early in the night and ground in by every table thereafter hard work

I'm not arguing though. It can definitely be hard work, and while it will never stack up to the pressure and responsibility of a "real job," it's definitely a profession that gets shit on a little more than is called for. But only a little.

Responsibility? Maybe not. But pressure? For someone who depends on waiting tables as their only source of income, not knowing how much money you'll be taking home at the end of the night and not knowing if you'll be able to pay your next bill on time, the ability to be completely screwed by one lousy tipper, and the constant threat of losing your job due to circumstances beyond your control, I'd say that is quite a lot of pressure.
