The 295 words and phrases blocked by Chinese Web censors
Most people in the world who get into trouble on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites fail to exercise a bit of healthy self-censorship. A new Carnegie Mellon University study has identified the 295 words and phrases the Chinese government looks for when it steps in and forcibly blocks communication between its own citizens.
. . .
When breaking down the messages to match with the popular political and social terms, the research team found that 212,583 out of 1.3 million checked messages, roughly 16 percent, had been deleted by the Chinese government. And 54 percent of all messages sent from Tibet had been deleted.

From this post and on, I hereby expand the scope of manipulation and censorship beyond Yahoo!
Quote : | " Official: US govt already seized hundreds of foreign domains
US seizure of a Canadian gambling website caused online outcry as it was registered abroad and thought to be outside American jurisdiction. But this is far from isolated; it has emerged that the US has seized hundreds of foreign domain names.
US customs official Nicole Navas confirmed that the US government has taken control of 750 domains, “most with foreign-based registrars” over the past few years. " |

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Yahoo's turnaround attempt is going to be messy.
In his first three months on the job, CEO Scott Thompson has imposed the largest layoffs in the company's 17-year history, reshaped the board of directors, picked a potentially disruptive fight with a major shareholder and sued Facebook for patent infringement.
He says there's even more upheaval to come.
Thompson delivered a painful jolt Wednesday with a payroll purge of about 2,000 workers, or about 14 percent of Yahoo's 14,100 employees. The cuts will save about $375 million annually as Yahoo tries to boost its earnings and long-slumping stock price.

Quote : | "NEW YORK (AP) — Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson left the company four months into the job Sunday after more than a week of scrutiny into inaccuracies on his resume and in company filings.
The struggling Internet company had hoped that Thompson, who became CEO is January, would turn things around. But he now becomes the fourth CEO to leave Yahoo in five years. He is being replaced by Yahoo's global media head Ross Levinsohn.
Thompson's exit was encouraged by Third Point, the activist hedge fund that owns nearly 6 percent of Yahoo shares. Third Point claimed that Thompson had padded his resume with a degree in computer science from Stonehill College. Thompson did earn an accounting degree from Stonehill, a Catholic school near Boston, in 1979, a fact that Yahoo correctly lists. But he did not earn a computer science degree." |
