I'm calling bullshit. It matters 100%. See the title of the thread isn't don't be black in a gated community, it clearly specifies that the gated community be white...and we're not talking about the color of the gate.

Because people WANT the shooter to be a white racist, it sells way better than an hispanic shooting a black kid. People want that drama and the "news" outlets are more than happy to give that to them. People also WANT soooo bad for the black kid to be this innocent, young, straight-A student, who just wanted to get his little brother some skittles.

See, now that it comes out the shooter and community aren't as white as people wanted they have to stick to their want to convict this guy without ever knowing all the facts. Good for you guys. It's just like after it because clear that Crystal Mangum was lying it wasn't carried nearly as much as before. There were no protests by the NAACP, no apologies (that I ever saw), it was just like her supporters either continued to support her or just wanted it to go away.

Meh...the fact that it's not a "white" gated community doesn't make that much of a difference. You act like mexicans can't be racist towards black people. And if you don't think that the fact that this kid was black didn't have an affect on the mindset of Zimmerman at the time....then I just don't know what to tell you.

It's relevant to this particular discussion when half of the posts in this thread are centered around ideas such as this:
Quote :
"Guns don't kill people, racist White people kill people. "

I think God should admit his error and offer an apology.

"I think the same law that Zimmerman is hiding behind in claiming self defense is going to be his undoing. What I mean by that is even if Trayvon did charge or attack Zimmerman, a case could be made that he was lawfully able to do so in self defense - as in Trayvon perceived a threat (and rightfully so) in Zimmerman as a strange man who didn't identify himself as an officer following him, confronting him (presumably with a pistol), and questioning him about being in a place he had a lawful right to be in."

Well first off, I highly doubt Zimmerman was chasing the guy/confronted him with his pistol drawn or even showing. You can't say what you said in all honesty, with no proof. You can't say Zimmerman approached him with a pistol because that implies he was brandishing the firearm, which is very different than concealed carrying and approaching someone. If the latest posts are true, and Zimmerman ended up "chasing" (as opposed to following/tailing), cornered/detained, then he should be charged with a crime. There is a huge difference between following/keeping an eye on someone and then chasing & detaining. If that's what happened, then the kid would could reasonably be in fear because some stranger is running him down (as opposed to someone merely following; one is threatening one is not).

The race card playas will not backpedal. They'll stick to their desire for racial drama to the bitter end.

I think being followed by someone you don't know would yield reasonable fear in the mind of most people. I'm not talking someone walking behind you... I'm talking an older, heavier man that you don't know FOLLOWING you.

Sounds to me like this neighborhood was pretty crime-infested prior to the shooting, article even said this wasn't the first shooting there

Quote :
"There were eight burglaries, nine thefts and one other shooting in the year prior to Trayvon’s death"

That is one criminal incident every three weeks on average

followed =/= chased

Chasing is a lot more threatening IMO....if someone is running toward you, and you are clearly running away, it would be reasonable to assume you are at risk of being harmed and therefore defend yourself.

I'm not saying being followed can't be suspicious/threatening. But there is a huge difference between been chased and being followed.

I didnt say anything about brandishing the firearm. I said confronted him (presumably with a pistol).
I suppose Zimmerman could have gotten in a fight with Trayvon, left the fight to go to his truck and get a pistol, and then return to the fight shoot

Let me boil down the position of the mouth-breathing idiots in this thread so far

(1) Zimmerman wasn't white so this can't be racist. Argument: Liberals are pro-minority no matter what (and to a fault). Minorities are always right. BUT THEY'RE BOTH MINORITIES!!! How could racism be involved!? Checkmate, LIEberals

(2) The systematically racist police department which is, in basically every category, demonstrable discriminatory and unfair toward blacks has nothing to do with this story because THE MAN DOING THE SHOOTING WASN'T EVEN WHITE. The attitudes prevalent in the police department have nothing to do with the case. C-c-c-c-checkmate. *Slow clap begins, and gradually everybody in the Denny's is giving me a standing ovation*

There is a racial element to this...but the bottom line is the guy who was shot committed no crime and was gunned down. This is not some mutual fight that got out of hand and someone pulled a gun, the guy who shot was clearly the aggressor, had he not pursued the victim there would have been no altercation and no need for "self defense".

The shooter was pursuing him with not only no authority to do so...but no evidence whatsoever that he committed or was about to commit a crime.

Could someone explain the difference between being chased and followed to me?

I could be following you down the street for valid reasons
1) we are going the same way, maybe to the same place (like the same park or store)
2) i think you are up to no good and want to see what you are doing
3) you are walking away from a crime scene that i know about

In all these situations a safe distance is maintained to keep both parties from feeling physically threatened or escalating the situation

etc

If you are being chased you are making some effort to get away (ie running, jumping over things, verbally confronting me) and I am still coming toward you.

So if we're going with this, it would appear that Trayvon felt threatened, and was trying to get away....

based upon the calls to 911 from bystanders, his conversation with his friend on the phone, and the own admission of the shooter that he was persuing him "they always get away with this..", etc

I'm gonna say it looks like Trayvon was being chased. How else do you explain him getting close enough to the shooter to get in a physical confrontation? It could not have happened from following distance.

More of a reflection on God, really. Sad crimes like this go un/underreported frequently. I can't say if this got a huge amount of attention from big name media (CNN, Fox) because I don't pay attention to those.

But really, this thread had a clearly defined trolltastic motive:

Quote :
"Guns don't kill people, racist White people kill people. But maybe it wouldn't have been so easy for him to kill a kid if he didn't have a gun."

10 pages later, he was successful.

Zimmerman mutters "Fuckin Coons" during 911 call

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=jL72w4xiTVU#t=137s

A habitual caller, fixated on crime and focused on young, black males. Also, on at least two prior occasions, the Sanford Police Department was accused of giving favorable treatment to relatives of officers involved in violent encounters with blacks.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/03/17/2700249/shooter-of-trayvon-martin-a-habitual.html#storylink=cpy

My theory: Zimmerman is actually pack_bryan, having traveled here from the future where Obama has turned America into a One-Party (Black Panthers) State where everyone with lighter skin than Wesley Snipes is treated as a suspect by the Ministry of Racist Hate Pre-Crime. The head of said Ministry being none other than a Mr. Trayvon Martin.

Why assume he was "successful" without being to judge whether or not racism actually played a large role in this case?

Like that would be too hard, I guess. Requires learning something about the world and society we live in, and being able to apply that knowledge thoughtfully to a case that has nothing to do with you. All pretty foreign, alien shit I imagine.

I feel like this guy was already guilty even if he were not a racist...but there is a good chance he is racist & using race to decide who looks "suspicious".

Pretend they are the same race and look at the circumstances. It all still adds up to him having no reason to pursue this person or threaten him physically, the guy who is being chased gets killed, was doing nothing illegal and was not armed.

Also where are the shooters injuries? What threat of physical harm was he defending against? Did the guy he was chasing turn to confront him or maybe even walk toward him? (That is a reasonable response to being chased) If you are chasing OR following someone you can not be too surprised when they turn toward you or approach you....even in an upset manner.

1) Its a God thread.
2) It started as a slanted troll thread based on speculation of an emerging news story that focused on highly polarizing aspects of society.

I doubt I will "learn something about the world and society we live in" from such a thread. There are much better ways to do that which I take taken advantage of. Rather, I have spent my limited spare time on much more fulfilling things than this thread, so pardon me if I can skim and make a generalization such as "User I dislike was successful at producing a highly discussed thread based on a controversial news story because it got to a high amount of pages (10) on a forum that rarely sees threads go over 2 pages these days."

As of late, I've decided to try and get away from threads such as this that focus on negative user trolling and I can't say I've missed it one bit. Shit like this isn't a good path forward for TWW, in my opinion, but unfortunately appears to be the quick and easy way to get activity lately.

[maybe that's just society for ya]
