Considering getting one. Reliability, models, alternatives?

Yeah I'm not looking to use their syrup mixes or anything, mostly just want available soda water and the occasional homemade ginger ale

i love my soda stream.

we use it daily to make your typical soft drinks and drinks flavored with fruit juices. it's nice to just be able to make whatever you want at the time. since you make it 1 liter at the time, you never have drinks that go flat.

i really like not hauling in sodas from the grocery store and finding space for them when i buy them in bulk because they're on sale.

not to mention, we're not swamping the recycle bin with bottles and cans.

i don't know that it is cheaper than just buying whatever soda is on sale, but after the purchase of the machine, the cost is comparable.

So walmart is listing a 15 ct of 1 liter soda for $16.33 ~ $1.08/l.
The direct website order for the CO2 refil is $80 for 130L ~$.62/l.

Am I missing something? Everyone says its so much cheaper just to buy the soda water separate.

This. I can deal with off brand sodas, but their syrups just arent very good...at least the ones i've tried.

Agreed on all points. I just wished I liked the syrups more.

I considered this like a year or so ago, but after reading the reviews on the syrups I wasn't impressed.

For the most part I just drink sweet tea these days, 60% less sugar than Mountain Dew and no carbonation.

I have one on my registry. I just want it to be able to make the soda water. I figure if I want some flavor I'll just add a bit of fresh fruit juice and some agave nectar. I want it mainly because of my allergy/histamine issues, at the moment I'm not allowed anything artificial, no dyes, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial or even concentrated flavors. No corn syrup either.

we want one just for the soda water as well. I've used a friends and just mixed it 2/3s soda water and 1/3 whatever juice I wanted and it was pretty good. i dont care to use whatever crappy syrups it comes with.

Have you tried the Zevia sodas? They use natural sweeteners and most (if not all) of their drinks are clear. It's kind of odd drinking clear grape soda. I'm not a huge fan of the taste, but they're not terrible either.

Sometimes I just want that nice soda water burn that I get from soft drinks. I don't want the aspartame, sugar, or caffeine that comes with most of them anymore though. I might drink one or two of these a week plus the occasional soda for cocktails and when eating out.

this is relevant to my interests. I hate drinking plain water.

I am a diet soda addict, so I was looking in to these because I want to reduce my intake of artificial sweeteners. I was thinking that I could use lemons/limes/oranges to add a bit of flavor. these machines are just too much money for me.

GreenJay, this is the second thread you have called out my allergies in. If you would like to talk to my doctor or watch me eat some of the offending foods and break out in a rash or puke half the night please feel free to shoot me a pm. Agave syrup does not cause me to have a rash or puke, corn syrup does both.

Skack, where can I get Zevia sodas from?

When I buy soda water at the supermarket it's something like 75 cents for a liter. And I only buy it once in a blue moon so I just don't know if I would ever go through 130L of CO2 fast enough to justify the cost of the machine. I could see if you were someone that drank a crapload of soda where it could potentially save you some money but for the occasional carbonated beverage drinker you seem better off just buying on sale.

2^the reason I want it is because I only drink soda water once in a blue moon. I end up wasting most of a liter bottle because it goes flat. It would be nice to just make it when I want it.

hahaha you want to buy a $90 gadget for your very occasional soda cravings

are you going to store it next to your snow cone machine, margarita blender and quesadilla maker?

I put it on the stove and BAM!

that shit is amazing - and it makes way more than quesadillas

Now, we don't have a soda stream, but the idea is a little different than useless inventions like quesadilla makers, or snow cone machines, or other gadgets whose jobs really could be performed adequately with other common household items.

I get that - and I probably would get some good use out of such a device

elise wanting one seems ludicrous, though

she admits she can't even drink 1 liter of soda
but she wants a $100 machine whose only purpose is to make soda 1 liter at a time

I drink SodaStream's version of coke zero on almost a daily basis. And I adore making my own soda w combinations of fruit juice.

Their cola based syrups leave a lot to be desired, but their fruity Sprite and Fresca type knock offs are just fine.

One reason we have one is that my husband gets best buys employee discount on it and the syrups.

I hardly ever drink milk and it usually goes bad before I can drink the whole carton.
I think I'll get a cow.

(This is what 12 packs of cans are for. They last practically forever when you don't drink soda often and only cost $3. )
