I've been listening to a shit load of comedy albums recently and wtf i've only laughed at like 1 or 2 kathleen madigan tracks. I'm not saying all the male comedians are hilarious but wtf. I know women who are hilarious IRL, why can't they do standup?

Hitchens wondered the same thing.
Quote : | "Why are men, taken on average and as a whole, funnier than women? Well, for one thing, they had damn well better be. The chief task in life that a man has to perform is that of impressing the opposite sex, and Mother Nature (as we laughingly call her) is not so kind to men. In fact, she equips many fellows with very little armament for the struggle. An average man has just one, outside chance: he had better be able to make the lady laugh. Making them laugh has been one of the crucial preoccupations of my life. If you can stimulate her to laughter—I am talking about that real, out-loud, head-back, mouth-open-to-expose-the-full-horseshoe-of-lovely-teeth, involuntary, full, and deep-throated mirth; the kind that is accompanied by a shocked surprise and a slight (no, make that a loud) peal of delight—well, then, you have at least caused her to loosen up and to change her expression. I shall not elaborate further." |

Here is my guess....
Stand up is a lot of about taking situations in which the audience can relate and then spinning it around to where it's hilarious. When a woman is doing stand up, it might be harder for a man to related to things because they don't bleed from their vaginas.
Also, just because someone is very witty it doesn't mean that would do well with a routine. Honestly, I would probably say that improv skits would probably even the playing fields a little bit more, because it gives people a chance to use their wit and not just great writing skills. 3/18/2012 9:37:14 AM

Situational standup is not the funniest. When I say someone is funny I don't just mean they're witty or quick to think of things.

I like Wanda Sykes and some of Margaret Cho's old stuff (as in the 90s). I LMAO at a Paula Poundstone special from like '87.
I've never watched Ellen's standup but I find her likable as a person.

Bridesmaids was not nearly as funny as people made it out to be. I'm still miffed by the rave reviews it got. Was there secret funny stuff going on in the background or something?
And, really, I guess I'm not that miffed by the reviews. It's just the soft bigotry of low expectations... LOL 3/18/2012 11:54:18 PM

a lot of comedy is ragging on oneself in a situation or ragging on someone else in the situation
if a woman disses herself the usual reaction is 1) awww poor girl she has low self esteem 2) attention seeking , neither of which provides a hardiharhar 3/19/2012 12:17:56 AM

Maybe female comedians are funny to women. Have you ever listened to a bunch of women talking to each other with no men around? Have you heard the shit they will cackle at? Their brain works differently, bros. Don't try to understand it. You can't understand it.

Quote : | "Why did God have to make the lesbians funny and attractive? Fuck you for giving me a penis!" | I like my penis and don't find Ellen particularly attractive (handsome, yes) but I agree, the funnier females tend to be lesbians.
I suspect this has to do with the fact that on average women are subliminally more self conscious about appearances and are thus have difficulty achieving that paradox of confidence and ego subjugation that comedy demands. Since lesbians have already had to deal with learning who they are in a world where they are not readily accepted, they have often mastered this trait. Which begs the question, with the normalization of homosexuality, will lesbians get less funny?
It also begs the question, do I know what I am talking about or am I just full of shit? 3/20/2012 2:37:25 PM
