meh...theres something to be said about national exposure and if we make another deep tourney run this year, Howell will have a lot more exposure than Smith's one NIT experience

also Howell has averaged over 9 rebounds a game the past 2 seasons...Smith averaged over 7 rebounds per game one season

I was a big fan of Tracy, but I'd take a senior Howell over a senior Tracy

edit: of course, a senior smith was battling a ongoing knee injury, but still, i think howell is a more complete player

Just going off my poor recollection of the Smith years...

Tracy had a better game with his back to the basket than Howell does. But Howell is stronger and a much better rebounder. Tracy was much more crafty around the basket.

Howell needs a mid-range jumper which I haven't seen too much of. I don't remember Tracy hitting a lot of jumpers either. Probably b/c both were told to stay around the basket which is where they are/were needed.

Howell needs a better vertical. When he's under the basket he need to be able to dunk with with people on him. I don't really see him in the NBA. Hope I'm wrong.

I thought that Howell has noticeably improved his jumper. Tracy did have better footwork around the basket, but Howell is much stronger. Howell's defense isn't great, but it's serviceable I remember Tracy being a defensive liability. And Howell is a much better passer. From what I recall of Smith.

howell fits better as a role player than tracy did

tracy's main talent was scoring on a bad team. howell isn't a great defender but he rebounds at a high rate and can do his thing without being the focal point of the offense. he also has a decent j. he hasn't used it much this year but last season he would pop every now and then

not saying he's a lock to make it but he fits better as the 10th guy on an nba roster.

tracy having his final season ruined by injury probably didnt help him much either

that was an amazing game he had. Hard to believe we actually ended up outrebounding Duke in the game. They were obliterating us at one point. Howell just became an animal.

He's averaging 13 points and 10.5 rebounds in 29 minutes.

I know it's still a little early in the season, but who were the posters on this board who were arguing a year or two ago that he'd never be a solid player, and that there's no way he'd average close to a double-double?

His '10-'11 sophomore season when he averaged 7.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 18 minutes? Yeah, I saw that.

I think he was always a double double player per 40 minutes. The problem was always the foul trouble keeping him off the court.

it was me vs hey now. Looks like another victory for the conservative ham sandwich portfolio.

http://brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=593750&page=15

facekey to next season is richard howell. If he's ready to be 30 mins,12ppg, 10 reb, 2 ast then we can make the tournament.

hey nowHe is not capable of that.

face why do you say that?

If his conditioning is good and he cuts his foul rate down he can easily get that.

Have you ever seen his per minute numbers? They are fairly incredible.

hey nowMaybe once every 7-8 games, but he's doesn't have the skill set to do that for an entire season.

faceSaying howell doesn't have the skillset to avg 12 and 10 is ludicrous. He did it easily this year off his per minute numbers. He's one of the premeire rebounders in the entire country.

hey now
that is an awful argument

why not project his stats over 40 minutes? just as realistic

faceYeah who would ever look at a player does when he's in the game and then try to project what he'll do next year when he's in the game.

What a stupid idea!

Clearly, the better solution is just to pick random numbers and then fervently defend them.

I mean agreeing with his actual opinions and not stat regurgitations. get a room man, your face stroking is gross.

Have you not seen how many of his recent predictions were totally wrong? Just in the last week he went from predicting our basketball team would lose 7 conference games, to talking about how we have a chance to go undefeated in conference play.

not hard to understand that as the season goes on, more data is available to use as a forecast

it's the Nate Silver model. of course it's not the end all be all, but just a prediction based on available data

I went to high school with Shavlik Randolph. Nice guy, dumb as a box of rocks. I had him sign a page of my yearbook and no one else could touch it in hopes he'd do good. Sadly this did not happen. I remember a lot of people at school being pissed he didn't choose State when he picked Duke.

How in the hell does someone grab 1600 rebounds in a career?

I doubt they played as many games back then as they do now either.

Paul Silas had 1751 rebounds in his college career

he only played 3 years

[Edited on January 22, 2013 at 3:48 PM. Reason : he averaged 20+ ppg and 20+ rpg for his entire collegiate career]

A different game back then. No 3 point line, lower shooting percentages, less defense, more white people

[Edited on January 22, 2013 at 3:51 PM. Reason : shavlik had a 35 and a 34 rebound game. Bill Chambers had 51 once.]
