A little early to freak out, but the pomeroy rankings putting us at #24 is definitely worrisome.

We simply have to try to play defense this year. We did it late in the season so I'm hoping we can do it this year.

Right, its too early to know anything but its troubling to see unbiased estimators not confirming that our lofty rankings are legitimate.

it uses last season's results. If, if we can play like we did in the last several games of last season, then the first half of last season is pretty irrelevant. I'm pretty sure that's why we're ranked so high in the polls.

Confirmed: TDT at Western Blvd Bojangles for lunch today. As I was leaving and he was entering, I didn't see if he ordered a CJ Biscuit, but I imagine his strength will be at an all time high for the scrimmage.

Well, guys like Jeff Goodman have been to our practice and other team's practices, and are ranking us in the top 10. Kenpom's formula gives more emphasis to last year's results and less emphasis on incoming players. All types of preseason polls are flawed, but I like the fact that guys who have seen us practice are willing to put us in the top 10.

I agree that we were a better team at the end of last season and that our early season play is probably less accurate than our late season play.

But #24 ain't #6.

Just pointing out again that our expectations are basically the best case scenario , so we shouldnt be upset if we are a top 15-20 team.

i won't be, and that's why I'm not "freaking out" at all at a #24 ranking. I almost hate that we're predicted so high in most pre-season polls. It sets up a lot of room for disappointment, especially with all of our irrational fans.

We talkin bout practice again?

Funny you mention CBS Sports, they ranked us #15 and UNC #10. The best part is the analysis from an opposing coach:

Quote :
"Quote from an opposing coach in the league: “I think McAdoo is terrific. He doesn’t have a defined game, but he’s a high-energy, great rebounder and he is a great driver for his position. Aside from him, there are a lot of question marks. I don’t think any of those guys are pros. It’s a unique Carolina team. What makes them go are point guards and bigs, and their big guys are different and their point guard is unproven. Paige is really good, but he’s not Kyrie Irving. You’ve got Strickland at the two; that’s a two-guard who doesn’t shoot. You’ve got McAdoo inside; and he doesn’t post up. Joel James could have motor problems.

“They’re Carolina, that’s one of the reasons everyone is picking them so high. They have good size, the makings of a good defensive team. They have a wealth of talent, a great coach, a star player and versatility. If Paige can defend, they should be able to pressure people, get into passing lanes. Point guard play is a big key. When Williams had Ray Felton and Ty Lawson and Kendall Marshall, they’re damn good. When you have Larry Drew, you’re not as good. I’m just not sure what their M.O. is. Could this be one of his teams like a few years ago, when last year’s stars were young and they struggled?”"

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/storylist/20512719/22/2012-13-college-basketball-previews/no-10-north-carolina

Call me crazy, but that doesn't sound like a top-10 team to me, unless they are banking on Marcus Paige playing at the level of Felton, Lawson and Marshall. I also continue to maintain that McAdoo is overrated. He's a great athlete who gets steals and runs the floor very well, but he doesn't block shots, he can't post up, and has a very suspect shot. He'll get his baskets in transition like he did last year, but he's not a guy you worry about killing you in the paint. When you consider that they are replacing 2 of the best post defenders in college basketball with McAdoo and raw freshman C Joel James, the drop-off should be substantial.

I just don't see UNC being able to match up with Duke, NC State and FSU in the frontcourt, and it'll keep them from being a top team.

LOL, CJ Leslie can't post up? Doesn't block shots?

Last I checked, Leslie was our best post-up weapon and blocked more shots than anyone on the team, by far. McAdoo, on the other hand, doesn't do either one well. Don't make me dig up stats and shit.

(I'm looking at a pic of them standing beside each other, and it seems that Howell has a few inches on brown. Howell, De Thaey and Painter are all about the same heigh and have a few inches on Brown. Wood has an inch or so on Brown.)

I think the floor for this team is 3rd in the conference, 4 seed in the tourney & a Sweet 16 return. Obviously the ceiling being to take the ACC & getting to the Final 4 as a 1 seed. I see us being closer to the floor, if not under it (read: NC State Shit)

^^I wouldn't have, but let's be honest, if this team doesn't get as far as last year's team, the fanatical NCSU fans will be livid & screaming for a new coach again already

Who's going to Saturday' exhibition?

I don't know anything about Belmont Abbey, although I just read that they have a pre-season (Division II) All-American guard. And they play Davidson Thursday night.

Any predictions? I'll say 86-61.
